Hi,

I've just bought the 2-Disc Collector's Edition of the Rodriguez/Tarantino Grindhouse and I must say that it's a pain in the ass to know how to keep it in Dvd profiler.

For those who don't know it, Grindhouse is in fact two different movies (Planet Terror by dir. Rodriguez and Death Proof by dir. Tarantino) that was intended to be seen in "one package" in hommage to the american genre.

So, the problem is that the two movies are on the same blu-ray disc. There is already one contribution that took the decision to have only one profile for this release but that doesn't satisfy me, I want (at least on my personnal database) to have the two movies in child profiles.

Is there a smart way to do this and do I need to keep it to myself or is it worth to offer to the online database ?

You say it's two films on a single blu-ray disc?

If that's the case, and you want a child profile for each film, then the only option is to create two manual profiles which you would have to keep locally.

To create a manual profile, click on "add DVD" -> choose "add by title" -> and then uncheck the box at the bottom of the screen that says "download profile from Invelos."  This will give you a completely blank profile that you can fill in.  Unfortunately these are not contributable, but I believe there's a thread here in the forum to share them through.

Yes, it surprised me too. Especially since there are 2 brd and I was pretty sure they'd have put one film on each disc instead of keeping one for the bonuses

Ok for the contribution, that's what I'll do

Grindhouse is one film in my opinion. While extended versions of Death Proof and Planet Terror were released as separate films later, Grindhouse itself was intended by the directors to be watched as one movie and should therefore be in the database as one movie.

Well, it was indeed intented to be watch in a single seance but it's still two separate entities that each have its own crew.
I completely respect what Rodriguez and Tarantino have done (and that's why I bought this edition) but even in grindhouses you were watching multiple movies not one big movie for the length of the showing so, in my opinion, it's to be listed separately

I think, certainly as far as the main Db is concerned it should be one movie... otherwise where do you draw the line? Things like "The Seven Deadly Sins" is one movie split into 7 short films each with different cast and writer, for example.

But it has only been released (in theatres or on dvd) only as a hole when Grindhouse has mainly been shown as two seperate movies, hasn't it ?

But I agree that, as it is, it should appear as a single movie in the main db, it's just that, in cases like this, it would be great to be able to have different "views" of the disc in the db

I respectfully disagree with SilentBob1138 in that the directors intended them to be watched as "one movie". They were intended to be watched as a Double Feature, just as it was in the 60s and 70s in theaters dubbed as "Grindhouses" where exploitation films such as these were played as multiple features in small inner-city cinemas.

IMO "Grindhouse" should have child profiles for each feature film. Unfortunately in the 2-Disc Collector's Edition Blu-ray both features are on the same disc making it impossible to profile the set as a normal box set.

Another thing about this Blu-ray release that I don't like and one of the main reasons I didn't purchase it is the audio. This set only comes with a standard Dolby 5.1 mix...no HD audio track .

Absolutely. It's a double feature, and that's how it's been profiled in the German release I have. [EAN 886973437490]

Although I would probably have left out the fake trailer stuff from the profile, they are not "features".

(Of course, since it's contained on a single disc, it can only be profiled with dividers for the main db.)

Grindhouse wasn't so much a movie as an experience, at least in the theater.

I'd say just use episode dividers to seperate the films like any other 2 movies on 1 side of a dvd profiles we do now. Easy! That would be contributable.

Or go custom and make your own child profiles for each film (or copy the extended dvd profiles), just don't contribute them.

I have to agree with bigdaddyhorse.  While it is a 'double feature', it is a single film, called 'Grindhouse', and it is meant to be watched that way...which is why they included all the fake trailers.  The original theatrical release, at least here in the states, was a single feature.  You purchased a ticket to 'Grindhouse', not 'Planet Terror' or 'Death Proof'.  It is unfortunate that the DVD releases split the segments up, but all seems to be set right with this release.

It should be profiled as a single release, using dividers for each segment that has credits.

That is correct and like you said, when you went to see it, you didn't pay for Death Proof or Planet Terror, you paid for both of them under the title Grindhouse. I know the intention of the experience but as far as the contribution goes, it can be contributed as one using episode dividers as bigdaddyhorse said.

You purchased a ticket to 'Grindhouse', not 'Planet Terror' or 'Death Proof'.

So if you were one of the happy ones who purchased a ticket to Woodstock you went to see a band called "Woodstock" (and to do a lot of other happy things too)

I know that the IMDB is an evil, evil here but at least this time their description is pretty much spot on "Two full length feature horror movies written by Quentin Tarantino & Robert Rodriguez put together as a two film feature. Including fake movie trailers in between both movies."

So, in my opinion, two movies ment to watch at one stand.

After looking at imdb, the USA release was indeed one part only ... but it was almost the only country worldwide that has seen the movies in that format, so that shouldn't influence the contributions for releases outside US, don't you think ?

Moreover, that doesn't go against what I was saying, it's still a seance of two films

I don't believe IMDb is an evil, but I prefer to listen to the directors when it comes to what they intended...

"Rodriguez was standing in Tarantino's living room when he noticed an old movie poster spread out on the floor. It was a one-sheet for the 1957 double feature Dragstrip Girl and Rock All Night. Rodriguez owned the same poster.  ''I told Quentin that I'd always wanted to do a double feature,'' says Rodriguez. ''Then I said, 'Hey, why don't you direct one and I'll do the other?' Right away he said, 'And we've got to call it Grindhouse!' It happened that quickly.''"

So, as I said earlier, it is a 'double feature', but it is a single film called 'Grindhouse'.
