He'd been busy the past few years with Heaven & Hell...which was technically really Black Sabbath with a name change. Ronnie was even still playing live shows with Heaven & Hell late last year, and there was a planned European tour for this year. The first time I saw him live on stage was in 1987 on the Dream Evil Tour in Düsseldorf, the first and only concert in my life I had to leave early due to my dad picking me up on time.....
In the past 20+ years, I managed to see him quite a few times and never left the venue disappointed.
While his solo outputs in the more recent past lacked some of the momentum the first four solo pieces held and went more in a doom and heavy oriented way as opposed to the 80's metal and hardrock vibe, IMO reuniting with Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Bill Ward to form Heaven & Hell really put him back where he belonged all those years, in the spotlight.
The Devil You Know was one of the best CDs released in 2009, a perfect blend of Dio's lyrics and voice with the riffing only Tony Iommi can envision (obviously it takes a left handed player with two damaged fingers to create this unique sound and feel) and their tours took them - once more - around the world and into the focus of fans of old and the new generation of those in love with Rock 'n' Roll played the hard and heavy way.
He will be sadly missed, but he won't die, for as long as someone still remembers the music he created, his spirit still lingers around.
And create he did, indeed.
He will aslo be remembered as one of the icons of the hard and heavy music circus who never indulged in the ready scandals of the rock'n'roll lifestyle but rather stood out as an example of excellence both musically and personally. Creating the Hear 'N' Aid project in 1986 is but one of the many achievements Dio should be remembered by apart from his extraordinary voice and lyrics.
I'll raise my glass to his memory tonight and relish the Radio City Music Hall DVD that H&H released two years ago.
The man who fought to kill the dragon for a lifetime has finally found his rainbow to cross.

The first time I saw Dio live, was as a support act of Metallica in 1990. My second encounter with Ronnie James Dio was in 1992, when Black Sabbath (yes, with Dio) played in Groningen, Netherlands, together with Testament. I can vividly remember going 100% fanboy after the show, clutching some vinyl albums which he, Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler and Vinnie Appice graciously signed. As you can imagine, these are now a few of my most prized possessions. Unfortunately it took 17 years before I saw him again, when Heaven & Hell closed the Waldrock festival, which was sadly also the last edition of the festival. Can you imagine a better closing act? | | Posted: | | | | One of the nicest guys I've ever had the pleasure of meeting, and in an industry of arseholes that was even more amazing. Wish I could've known you better Ronnie. I know terms like this get thrown around a lot, but Dio truely was a Metal God. What would metal be without him? Even death metal bands were influenced by him. He made me want to be a singer and had teh biggest coolest voice ever. Sorry Rob Halford, this has nothing to do with your gayness, Dio was stronger and had a bigger range, all respect due to Rob and Priest but Dio was best! Just glad I got to grow up when I did and see so many Dio tours in my time. Thank you for everything, and R.I.P. R.J.D.  Oh yeah, in Kalamazoo, in June or July 1987 or 1988, I was the Man on the Silver Mountain!
