Hi all,

Just bought DVDP today and was wondering if it was possible to browse a drive folder for my dvd's rather than entering them in one at a time by title.

I have most of my dvd's made into avi, iso or mkv formats for convenience sake with my home theatre system so it would be far easier for me to scan my drives. Can this be done or do I need to go back to entering them one at a time.

Thanks

If you create a list of UPC's of your DVD's you can use the bulkedit plugin. More info can be found here.

You can't import from ISO or AVI since there is no way to tell which version of the DVD it is. There are multiple versions in multiple localities of each movie available. Each will have it's own specifications.

Thanks cvermeylen.

To add more detail, you can actually create a CSV file that has as much of the DVD info as you want. For example if you want to bulk load a list of DVD avi's and mkv's, and you know the UPC, title and filenames, you can create a CSV file like so:

First row:  UPC,Title,Location,Notes

Then for each DVD, you need a row with "upc.locality","tile of dvd","file","[filepath disc=1]filepath of file[/filepath]"

or if you don't know the locality, "upc" is OK, or if you don't have the UPCs, just leave off the UPC in the first row, and don't include it in the DVD records, and BulkEdit will create a "manual profile ID" for you.

After the BulkEdit import, you should have a bunch of skeleton profiles that you can continue to improve. If you have UPCs, a "refresh" from Invelos will get to 99% there. Then if you install the LoadDVD plugin, you can start playing your DVDs immediately from an icon in DVD Profiler. The infomation in the Location and Notes fields will have already have been set up.

Post any issues either in the BulkEdit and LoadDVD threads if you go that way and have problems. Whatever you decide, good luck!!!

(By the way, I can make a script pretty easily that can create the CSV file for you if you need it, or the LoadDVD Pro plugin will create playlists from a file search.))
Thanks for your support.

Thanks guys for all your help. I'll try the bulkedit option and see how I go from there.

Just one other thing, some of the latest releases are not yet listed, how do I add these in correctly? ,eg, Ali G Bling Bling is not yet listed.

Thanks

Being as this is a user built database this is reasonably common for new releases (or the data will be quite sparse and pre-release info from etailers).

If you have the title just add it in the normal way, ie DVD -> Add to Collection (or click the Add to Collection button) then on the 'Add by UPC' tab putting the EAN/UPC in (to which it says Tile is 'Unknown') and when you add it then you will be prompted for the title (and then able to fill in any details you have, and have time to do!). At this point you can submit it to be added to the main database so in future everyone will have that release listed, but please pay very careful attention to the Contribution Rules before doing so - specifically note where you must get the data from (NOT third party databases like IMDb) and that you MUST make it clear where you got it all from in your mandatory contribution notes.

If you don't have the title yet (and can't find the UPC/EAN online) you can add it manually by adding by title and unchecking the 'Download from Invelos' option at the bottom of the screen. You can add any data you want but cannot contribute manual titles - to contribute they must have an associated EAN/UPC as that is what the database uses (along with Locality) as it's 'database key'.
If/When you do find the UPC/EAN you can change it from manual to 'normal' by selecting the title, then from the main DVDP 'task bar' seelct DVD -> Change UPC (near the bottom of the list) and then entering it. If, in the meantime, someone has added it to the database already, it will download data from the main Db next time you update (if your info is more up to date though, choose not to download that update and submit your improvements!).

Hope that helps.

Most concise, clear description I've seen of the way things work around here. Should be posted in the "Tips and Hints" for easy reference?

Cool, thanks. There is a blank spot in the "Migration Assistance" thread waiting for such a post as yours. Soon as I get authorization to edit the thread, I will add your contribution with an acknowledgement. (Done.)
