It's been couple years since I've started to register my dvd collection using DVD Profiler. Altough I really like the whole thing, there are some flaws that I would like to know if they can be corrected in a new version...
First of all, the idea of having a title registered is to show the movie as close as possible like the real thing apearing in theater or on DVD. It means that on any given list, the title that should show on my list should be the original one. Here are some examples taken from my actual listing
- On my list, I have the title ''13 going on 30 special edition'', but the real title was simply ''13 going on 30''
- for ''9 1/2 weeks:Original uncut, uncensored version'', it should be only ''9 1/2 weeks''
- for ''Ful metal jacket: Stanley Kubrick collection'', it should be only called ''Full metal jacket''
It's ridiculous all those fancy names attached to the titles. And it happens many times when I use the data. These additions should not apear in the title at all. Look on IMDB and none of this additions can be found attached to a title, none.
Also, I want to use DVD Profiler for all the information we can have, and there's a lot to look at. Would it be possible to get a field placed close to the title, original not modified, for the translated title. In my case, I would really like to see the original title equal to what in French (Quebec or France). I understand that this could take a long time, but I'm sure there's a way to match the title by using the net somehow. Ex. Dark Knight = Chevalier noir, Ice Age = Ere de glace...
Talking about the net, too many times titles aren't in your data listing. It's normal since we're all using datas coming from members. But I would really like to be able to register any given title with the barcode, and the system match them automatically, no matter where it is coming from. Most of the DVD are coming from the States, but in Canada, we do have our own version, or many other titles. We should be able to trace the data from suppliers established here (Future shop, Archambault, ...)
Please send these request to the proper department or person. I'M sure something positive can be done about this, and everyone can benefit from it too.

For one thing you are confusing the Edition Field with the the title. The title IS 13 Going on 30, the Edition is Special Edition. The DVD is 13 Going on 30: Special Edition and this IS, after All DVDProfiler. We also have a field specifically called Original Title whose purpose is exactly what you wish and is covered in the rules.
DvdProfiler is a user-built database, there are going to be titles that are not in the database because no user has entered the data. You are a user, therefore if you have a title which needs to be entered you need to get to it. First read the Rules and Foloow them, then set up your profile and contribute the data.
DVDProfiler is 10 years old and not born yesterday...as for IMDb they are the single worst source for movie data that there is and for your information we are NOT allowed to use their data or an other third part datasource for Contributions but that is covered in the Rules. Hmmm I wonder what movie IMDb ever produced was, I can't think of any.
The problem with your auto-matching concept is that we already know that data is not necessarily identical, even down to the Credit listings across different localities, regions and even versions. Therefore, auto-matching would introduce a level of error into the database. The most important thing for you or any other user to understand is difference between the Online and your LOCAL, if you wish to Contribute follow the Rules.
Remember your LOCAL is for your data, and you can do anything you want with YOUR data. The Online has to serve 500,000 and therefore must of necessity be much more generic. if you don't want to use the EDITION field , for example because you want to catalog Movies not DVDs then you don't have to. There is a reason for EVERYTHING in Profiler and a reason for everything in the Rules. Most importantly as I have pointed out several times now is that this is DVDProfiler not MovieProfiler, TVShowProfiler, DocumentaryProfiler or whatever. In fact the LOCAL database gives users great power to adapt the program as they see fit for their own usage, they could even use it for Games or Music though such data would not be Contributable obviously.
DVDProfiler is the best program there is for DVD cataloging, you haven't even got your feet wet yet. Explore the program and the Rules and you will discover that your issues have already been addressed...long ago.

| | Posted: | | | | Basically what Jubal has said (good tip from Tom there too!); and I also agree with him that if you look at all the info DVDP provides (and maybe change your displayed fields in your layout for example) a lot of what you're asking about you'll find has been addressed.

| | Posted: | | | | To expand on what terry said for example for the film 13 Going on 30, there are at least two separate releases. 13 Going on 30: Special Edition and 13 Going on 30: Fun and Flirty Edition I wouldn't call IMDb THE movie source as they are unreliable in terms of their accuracy, but they are A movie source.
