Hi

I have tried to run 3.1 and the beta (downloaded today) and both startup and then crash. even though the old version 2 still runs but cannot update as it needs a new database type.

Could you assist me?

Kind Regards

Mario Vermeulen

still a great product

Hi Mario,

First of all, I'd say: uninstall the beta, and forget about the beta for now.

If 3.1 still crashes, uninstall and reinstall that. If it still crashes: I'm no expert, but people have experienced similar problems with Vista 64 bit. Check out the following threads:
thread 1
thread 2
thread 3

Good luck!
DJ

P.S. Welcome to version 3.x! Once you'll have it running, you'll find it's way better than the old version.

There's currently issues running both 3.1 and the beta on the same computer.  I would also recommend sticking with 3.1 for now.

Vista windows should be considered a beta windows program as of all the problems I have heard about this system over Windows XP..

Just finished setting up my new computer, running Vista Ultimate 64bit, and just installed the beta release on it. Haven't done much but no problems what so ever so far.

I also heard the Earth is flat and evolution doesn't happen. Maybe you should not beleive everything you hear. But yes, of course people have problems with Vista over XP. Just like they did with XP over 9x, and 9x over 3.1 and Windows 3.1 over DOS.

Yeah, exactly, That's why a lot of business users are downgrading there Vista back to XP A Lot of stuff no longer works on Vista, drivers not available, Software library functions no longer available ... Vista 32 bit drivers only available, ... 64 bit not supported, ...
Sources for one or more of the changes and/or additions were not submitted. Please include the sources for your changes in the contribution notes, especially for cast and crew additions.

Yep; about to buy a new PC but I'm not paying for an operating systems and am going to use my present XP disc because of the lack of driver support for Vista (and because I want to decide where my files should go rather than be told)

Never had any real trouble with 2000 and XP, but Vista has given me nightmares from day one, starting with the SLOW File copy (still not fixed in SP1), stupid things like removing the name of the file that is being copied from the dialog (what idiot decided that), Abysmal startup times etc (and this is a 2.4ghz dualcore lappy with a 7200rpm HD and 4gb of RAM), and the totally NUTTY network device search (Almost Instant on a XP Machine connected to a 2003 domain, 20 to 30 seconds on Vista)

Do you get the impression I am NOT impressed with VISTA

As I said once here Vista Home Premium has about 100 updates not counting all the other program mods  and it still sucks.

Dave...

Yes, I get the impression. And I have never ever stated that Vista is perfect. There certainly are valid things to complain about. For the things you mention, I have one I agree on (file copy speed), one I did not notice (the file name on the copy dialog), one I can't comment on (don't have a domain), and one where I have the opposite experience (startup time - the prefetching really works on my system and I am reading email less than 5 seconds after I enter my login). I can add to your list as well (dragging files and folders into the command prompt no longer inserts the path - arghhh)...

For me, the overall improvements (start menu, bread crump in explorer, search, better support for programs written with modern GUI technologies, better default settings for access rights to files, etc) makes Vista a better OS than XP. Not by a huge factor, but it's better.

Obviously everyone will have to make up their own mind when it comes to see which OS is best - but assuming Vista is bad because you have heard it is bad is a mistake.

Does that mean I should buy Vista to find out if it is bad??

Now what's all this bit about the earth not being Flat???

Straw-man. Not once did I say you should buy it.

Vista is being targeted rather effectively by FUD (while much of it is based on some true problems it is blown completely out of proportions). So I recommend being carefull parsing judgement on the Vista quality based on just "hearing" about problems. Sure Vista is not even close to being perfect.... but it is not necessarely further from perfect than XP was.

I've been running DVDProfiler 3.1 on a Vista Ultimate x64 computer for two or three weeks now with no problems.

The next OS made by MS will be web-based and named Midori which will probably alienate more users. I predict that this will be the end of MS's dominance as other companies are creating things with the users in mind and not by a big brother concept. Power to the people.

Ehh. Are there OS companies who are not researching such a system?
