That means that if I (especially as a German) wouldn't know who Adolf Hitler was, it would be OK to wear his picture on a T-Shirt and it wouldn't be provocative (not to mention "illegal") anymore??

Yes I did, but it was to show the flaw in your argumentation, and for the sake of it let me wear a T-Shirt with the Dalaih Lama in China / Beijing! That he is looked at quite positive in the western regions of the world doesn't make it less provocative there.

That depends on where you live, in Russia (especially the poorer regions) many people still think that Joseph Stalin was a good leader and a hero.
The same goes for Adolf Hitler who still has a lot of supporters especially in the USA, where they are even allowed to use the old uniforms in public. In South-America he is still the most known German (even though he was Austrian), not necessarily a hero but for sure "well reputated".

I know too much history to consider Che anything other thamn a mass murdering thug. I for one am deeply offended that a user is allowed to post not only that image as an avatar but to couple it to an equally inflammatory screen name. I would be no less offended had he chosen any of the other numerous despots in world history. Barrack Obama's Houston office had a Cuban flag with Che's likrness on it hanging in it. When the candidate was asked about it, he responded with "I can't control what the volunteers do." To which I say BULL, it is simply one more of the N way too numerous issues that give me pause, big time, vis a vis a candidate for the highest office in this country and one of the most, if not the most powerful position, in the world.

I repeat, I am deeply offended by the users choice and the allowance of his choice on these forums.
