| Posted: | | | | Similar to when computer games require an online registration, when the company goes belly up you can no longer install your favorite game (that you /paid/ for!).
Because the majority of DVDProfiler's functions require access to your servers, what's a good estimate of what we'll lose if your company, sadly, (I love this program!) no longer exists?
I'm hoping it's just the ability to add newly bought DVDs to our local collections. That way I can just export to an XML file and write my own program that parses the information and I don't really lose anything.
Again, apologies if this is in the wrong section.

The program doesn't need server access to work, you just enter all the profile by yourself and do all the work. That's what I have done during the big blackout and the sofware did what it was suppose to : classify my DVD collection.
But don't loose any sleep for that since it won't happen | | | Last edited: by Jimmy S |

| Posted: | | | | As said above.. it's not like the software itself will suddenly stop working. You could use it right now without any internet access if you really wanted to. Currently you have the added benefit of a user driven database that continually adds new DVDs to it so if you choose you can just download what's available be happy with that. If that were to suddenly disappear it just means you would have to do the work, but the software still functions.
Honestly, if that were to happen, I would imagine Ken would release one final version that opens up the master database to a configurable setting so we could point DVDP to any host. I would bet somebody out there would be willing to then host that database and things would continue, at least for a while. Or other case would be he'd just sell everything over to a new owner.
In any event, the software truly doesn't need any other database but your own local DB to function. Sure, it will be more work for you to maintain your collection, but hey.. no more arguments in the Contribution forums. It would almost be worth it. | | | "Rules are for the obedience of fools and the guidance of wise men" - Douglas Bader "A common mistake that people make when trying to design something completely foolproof is to underestimate the ingenuity of complete fools." - Douglas Adams |

*Goes back to getting his database up-to-date.* where were you during the previous incarnation and demise of Profiler 2.x? The server was off line for several weeks, and most survived |

God forbid! I bet Ken and Gerri will still be updating the program and screening/approving/declining profiles from their rocking chairs at their nursing home in Florida when they are old and grey . You can add profiles manually to your collection by unchecking the "Download profile from Invelos" checkbox in the Add DVD window. You can also scan your own DVD covers and add them to your profiles. You can also host your collection on your own website using phpDVDProfiler. In other words...life goes on. Quote: Again, apologies if this is in the wrong section.
