1) You don't need to quote Rules to me.

If you are going to advocate doing something that is against the rules, then I am forced to.

3) Where in the Rules are production numbers mentioned AT ALL? Answer...they aren't.

***Giant Red Fish Alert***  The rules mention episode numbering.  Like it or not, production numbers are numbers.  Since they are, and the DVD uses them, per the rules, we have to use them as well.

That was a joke, by the way, a reference to the flashing ***RED  ALERT*** in ST.

Martian:

A liittle selective interpreting again. The rules says in it's entirety.

Enter the episode number and title in the divider that marks the beginning of that episode's credit list. The divider should be formatted as "1. Episode Title", or "Episode 1" if no title is available.

Now I will grant this
"If the DVD or DVD packaging specifically numbers the episodes, use that number in the divider. Otherwise, episodes are to be numbered sequentially in the order that they appear on the DVD(s) in the set, with the number sequence carrying over from disc to disc. Do not number non-episodic features such as movies or alternate cuts unless they are given specific numbers on the DVD or DVD packaging.

Here, unlike what you provided, is what the rules says in its entirety:

Complete Series/Season & Anthologies of Episodes:
Enter Cast and Crew for each episode using standard rules, and insert dividers to separate each episode's credit list from the others. Do not list Cast and Crew outside of the dividers even if they are credited in all episodes.

Enter the episode number and title in the divider that marks the beginning of that episode's credit list. The divider should be formatted as "1. Episode Title", or "Episode 1" if no title is available.

Take the episode title from the episode itself, or from elsewhere on the DVD or DVD packaging, exactly as shown. If all episode titles are entirely capitalized, use standard capitalization rules instead. If the episodes are listed with quotes around each title, exclude the quotes.

If the DVD or DVD packaging specifically numbers the episodes, use that number in the divider. Otherwise, episodes are to be numbered sequentially in the order that they appear on the DVD(s) in the set, with the number sequence carrying over from disc to disc. Do not number non-episodic features such as movies or alternate cuts unless they are given specific numbers on the DVD or DVD packaging.

The part I bolded, which you are ignoring, is quite clear.  If the DVD specifically numbers the episodes, which these DVDs do, use that number in the dividers.  I am sorry, but there is no getting around that sentence.

The part you quoted, deals with formatting, not content.  It tells us to use the format, "1. Episode Title."  That means the number, followed by a period, then the name of the episode.

Edit: I see you edited while I was responding, but I can't quite figure out what you mean with that addition.

When I read this it looks to me as if DVD and DVD Packaging are considered equals. So if I have two different numbering systems (prod code on the DVD; episode number in the booklet) I'd use my very own and very unique common sense and would opt for the episode number.

I see you were typing as I was...because of the line in the rules, that I quoted above, the DVD and DVD packaging are not considered equals.  This point is further emphasized by the line that reads, "...always verify the information directly from the DVD whenever possible."

Thanks, Martian.

This is dead on target.  No ambiguity.  No confusion.  No debate required.

No, the numbering should not carry over from one season (series) to the next unless the epsiodes themselves are numbered that way on the case, disc, DVD menus, or an episode list included with the set.

I totally agree; however (i can't find the thread) there was a huge argument on the Star trek sets that the final Ruling from the screeners on (IIRC) was not to use the usual 1., 2., 3. etc for episodes but use the numbering from the booklet so, in that case, the numbering on the dividers should, by the Rules, be changed to match.

FWIW I locked my profiles at this point so my episode list remained 1, 2, 3 etc!

This thread?

It was about numbering in overview though.
