I watch them after (at least the commentary and the interviews) and in the rare occasion I buy a recent movie I don't watch them since it's just boring and publicity stuff (even the trailer aren't really good for those films)... |

In other words., I may seen 2001 Space Odyssey - 40 times ., but the audio commentary to me would be, audio only and my powerdvd7 shrunk down to the task bar while I'm working on something else,, and listening.  Other soundtracks may be and can a real treat to watch/listen to. Kinda like having the director or cast/crew over to your house and you are all 'ears' to hearing about that favourite film of yours been made and put together.. I just hope the powers to be don't frequent this site or forum and find out that 9 our 10 don''t care for audio commentaries and that, (studios) could drop that feature in the near future . .  Can you imagine the uproar? actually I can't as most of you don't care for an 'educated view' on the film or movie..,, just the eye candy only please .  what we should have in place is What DVD's have the Best commentaries?? I love the cast section for LOTR,, but not the technical channels .., Who has the most entertaining?? - Roger Ebert (before he lost his voice.. ) would be one . I listened to all 4 tracks on all 3 movies. (Yeah, I'm a Middle Earth Nerd, how'd ya guess?) There are of course some exceptions, e.g. the UK DVD of "Creature from the Black Lagoon" carries a commentary from some film-historian. I tried several times to listen to commentaries, but I just can't get into it. If I'm going to spend my time watching the movie, I don't want something keeping me from hearing what's going on. | | Posted: | | | | There are many many great commentary tracks that were only available on Laser Disc,, and for some reason or another there were not 'automatically grandfathered ' over to DVDs. (copyrights etc.)
Two people come to mind that I would love to have: Jeanine Basinger - for It's A Wonderful Life ('46)
( I was able to track her down one day with an on line Internet search and posed that question to her, on why she wasn't able to contribute again on the newer formats of today., and she replied that she would have loved to have that commentary continued on,, but wasn't asked or consulted. )
The other is Ronald Haver's ( R.I.P.) two excellent commentary's - King Kong '33., and The Wizard of Oz . All these titles all from the Voyager Criterion Collection .. | | Posted: | | | | I usually watch the movie first, then the extas/commentaries. I have found myself going from watching everything on a disc, to just the basics (such as bloopers/deleted scenes). For commentaries, I like the cast ones over the crew, but find that a lot of them are fairly boring. If you're going to do a commentary, I want to know the behind the scenes things...not 20 minutes of silence as the director just watches the film.
One of my favorites, and it's a short one, is Dr. Seus' How The Grinch Stole Christmas. I watch that almost every Christmas.

| | Posted: | | | | Almost always movie first here as it's often a movie I've never seen (blind buy)... surprised at how many people do the same though given in a lot of other polls and discussions most of you seem to have a lot less blind buys than me and will have seen the movie before buying so extras wouldn't be spoilers.
I like decent commentaries but to be honest rarely have time for them given the amount on my 'to be watched' pile... I make an exception for the classic Doctor Who titles though and always listen to those commentaries (though not as soon after purchase as I used to).
FWIW I'm not a fan of Music Only tracks but I know plenty who are (not surprisingly often the same people who have soundtracks on CD). | | | | It is dangerous to be right in matters where established men are wrong |
