I number my collection based on the collection number from DVD profiler.

I never saw something like this before at a collection. You glue labels with a number to every case in a rack? I thought about it but could not find an answer. Why?

I make it similar to this.
Just always put the number that the DVD has in DVDP on your case, put it in this way into your storage and now print a report with your collection or look in DVDP what you are searching and you have it easy to find the movie.
For example you search Crank. It has 563 in your collection, you'll find it between 562 and 564.

Yeah, but I'd just find at C, between Cool Hand Luke and Crash. And I don't even have to ruin the spines of my DVDs.

Depends on how many titles you have. I sort mine alphabetically within genre. I've thought arranging them by DVDProfiler collection numbers, but that would clash with my "OCD" of having matching spines (eg TV series etc.).

FYI i don't clue anything to the spin I actually use clear packing tape, it comes right off if need be.  Also as far as organizing it in alphabetical order that is too time consuming considering i'm always buying DVD/Blu-Rays. That would involve always rearranging my DVDs on the shelves. I don't know about you, but I can find other things to do with my time, like watch a movie..    It's easier for me to use the DVDP collection #, because I can print the last 2 pages of my report and keep my catalog up to date. My catalog helps when people come over to watch movies and don't want to stand there and look at all the movies. They can simply flip open my binder and see exactly what I have, see whether or not its DVD or Blu-Ray find the number and go straight to it, No Questions No Problems. I hope that explains the method to my madness..

Believe me my TV series are out of order, and the OCD kicks in when I see it, but I have to resist to keep everything in collection number order..

I don't doubt it comes off, but it's still there and looks awful imho. I have close to 900 titles and no problems sorting them alphabetically although in fact I have a more complicated system than that. Still no problem knowing where a certain title is. But, what I don't understand is this: If you're going to sort by collection number, you don't need to stick the number on the disc to find it. If you don't sort by collection number, how does having the number on the package help in any way compared to just searching for the title?

You are entitled to your opinion. You have your way and I have mine and we will leave it at that..

I've never found much use for Collection Number other than keeping track of how many purchased items I've picked up as I don't assign one to boxset contents.  For example, the Indiana Jones trilogy will get a number but the child movies will not.

The thing I use it for the most is to sort my recent purchases to the top of the list.

But if you label your cases with the collection number, be sure you don't accidentally renumber them!

That is where the location and slot field come in to play.  I can use any text I want in location.

Location Rack 1
Slot 1:12

Means rack 1 shelf 1 slot 12
I then keep a thin notebook next on the shelf listed alphabetically.  When somebody come over, they can scan the notebook, and find the movie.

I am actually thinking about expanding the notebook, and include full sheets on each movie, with an index.

I found out a long time ago, that reorganizing movies alphabetically became a hassle, especially when you needed to make room for a box set.

Hey, I'm kinda new here and I also just recently bought some video shelves from a video store that was closing down.  I bought 2 of them at $25.00 each.  I couldn't believe my luck at that price.  I shrunk these photos before posting, I hope it works in here....

And here are some close-ups of the top of my shelves...

Probably gambling; over half my purchases are blind-buys I've never watched before and that's a gamble

I agree. I rarely have time to go to the movies, so when movies come to DVDs I just get them. I don't let peoples veiws of a movie persuade me in any way because I like to make my own opinion about movies. So definatly a gamble. I totally lost the gamble with The Stepfather and Smokin' Aces 2: Assasins Ball.... but I have broke the bank on a bunch! For me, it the thrill of finding an unknown gem of a movie that maybe 10 people in the world have heard of!

Virginia Beach has another blockbuster going out of business. So I took advantage once again. This time I was able to get 4 shelves for $100.  I should have enough storage space for at least a year..
