Hey there,

Got a tricky question about audio here.
As an example I take the newly released european Blu-ray of Payback.
It features the theatrical cut and the director's cut on one disk.
The longer version is the theatrical cut, therefore we take the running time from that.

Now to my question. The audio on both cuts is the same, BUT the shorter Director's Cut features an audio commentary.

Do we include this audio commentary or do we leave it out as it is only for the shorter version.

thx in advance for any help on this,
Donnie

I would include it, yes. It does seem worthwile to have the profile reflect that this disc has an audio commentary on it.

I think it's a bit difficult to decide in the case of "Payback", because both versions are completly different movies.

I would only mention it under "Features" but would not include it under "Audio", because it would suggest, the version with that specific running time would have an audio commentary.

Otherwise I used all tracks from the theatrical version of "I am Legend" while the running time is from the extended which has only an English language track. But this is just an extended version which does not differ that much from the theatrical cut.

I'd say: mention it in Features, but not in Audio Tracks - for the reason DaMikstar mentioned.

I would include it. I've seen audio commentaries listed for TV series even when it's only for one episode.

I just don't see how you can reach that conclusion - the rules certainly don't seem to set different requirements for the checkbox and the audio track: either it's there, or it's not. If we don't list it as an audio track, and someone filters on "Commentary" as an audio track, this disc won't show up. Since it DOES have one, that really doesn't seem right...

I'll try and explain how, T!M. The way I see it:

- the Features section in DVDP should cover everything on disc, no matter if the feature refers to the movie (main feature) being profiled (e.g. scene access, close captioned) or to other disc contents (e.g. featurettes);

- the Audio Tracks section in DVDP relates to the movie (main feature) that's being profiled, and to that movie only. You're not supposed to enter Audio Tracks for other disc contents than the main feature.

Now, the way I understood Donnie's OP he was going to profile the longer theatrical cut, and if that's correct, then IMHO that profile should not contain a commentary track in Audio, as that cut doesn't have one.
Maybe I misunderstood Donnie, however. If he's going to profile both cuts in one go (assuming they share the same credits  ), then I agree with you that the commentary track can be entered in Audio as well.
As it is my understanding that both cuts are on the same side of a single Blu-ray disc, my first question would be what it is exactly that's being profiled: the theatrical cut, the director's cut, both (possibly using dividers) or a mix of the two. In the first case, I'd still maintain "no commentary track in Audio", in the other cases I'd agree with you, T!M.

EDIT: Another way of asking my "first question": is Donnie going to profile the disc according to the Bonus Feature Film rules at the bottom of this page? I.e. with a Main Profile by EAN containing the theatrical cut and a child profile by Disc ID containing the director's cut as a Bonus Feature Film? Because then I think it's obvious what goes where.

I did profile the whole Blu-ray and entered the commentary track as audio.

DaMikstar is making some nice updates to my contribution but he aslo wants to remove the commentary track from the audio

We exchanged some Pms and want to see now how the majority here looks at this.

cheers

I'll grant you that. If that's how the profile is set up, then I'd list the commentary track on the appropriate profile only. But, since both cuts are on one disc, we can't really do that here, and so we're stuck profiling the entire contents "in one go".

I see - so both movies in one go. Then I'd say you did it correctly.

Why not? Wouldn't it be possible to profile the theatrical cut in a Main Profile by EAN and the director's cut as a Child Profile by Disc ID?

Why not?

I figured because it's the same disc. Adding the same disc as a child profile to itself seems a bit, well, uncomfortable. But maybe that's just me? If that's what we're doing, I have quite a bunch of theatrical version/extended cut blu-rays to re-edit...

I understand your point. On the other hand, it would allow to profile both cuts exactly as they are. I for one can't say "what we're doing" in cases like this - merely pointing out a different option.

EDIT: by the same token, I feel "uncomfortable" with profiling a mix of two different movie cuts rather than being able to attribute the data in the profile to one cut or the other in a clear-cut way - an issue of data transparency, if you like.

That's my opinion too but I know at least one profile is going through an update with a second audio track from an Extra on the disc and the person is receiving PMs of support - and, as usual, this isn't (as far as I can find) pinned down in the Rules
