Just to let you know that my beloved Zuleika was killed on Wednesday evening.   I think she was run over but I am awaiting the autopsy results to be sure.

I came home from my folks to find her lying in my carport aready gone. I was, needless to say, devastated!

Mithrandir seems to be ok for now but I am keeping a close eye on him to see if he will still need a companion while I am at work.

I hope Mithrandir won't be too sad...

We had to bury a cat today, too. The brother of my wife found one of his five cats ("Tigger", the only male in the house and not even one year old) dead in the neighbor's garden. It looked like he was hit by a car last night or early this morning. He tried to come back to his house but didn't made it the whole way.

So we came all and buried him in the garden.

That is very sad to hear, I think you should get a companion for Mithrandir,as he is used to have one.

Also isn't it possible to keep the cats in your home, so that they can run out ?

Also very sad to read this, it is always dangerous if cats run free, that is why a friend of mine who owns three cats, never lets them out, he has a huge house tho, where they have much space to run.

That's only possible with cats that have never been out of a house, otherwise they feel very sad and can't understand why they are locked up suddenly.

My wife and I have two cats, "Twinke" & "Honey", and they were born and grown up in our flat, so they are used to stay inside, but once a cat has tasted "freedom" they would start to be unhappy about being just in a flat. But since we live on the fourth floor and at a street with a lots of traffic, we never let them out.

But the brother of my wife lives in a house at a small street with few traffic, so his cats are often out in the garden.

Donnie

My house is too small to keep them indoors with a litter box and also that then smells after a while so I have to allow them out and whilst I do have fairly high walls around my garden they do literally climg them to get out.
However, at least she managed to get home if she was run over and I do know what happened to her unlike the 2 from last year at this time who disappeared off the face of the earth !

Very sad, my sympathies to you.  I don't know what I would do if something happened to my dear Ginger.

I'm sorry for your loss!  It's hard to lose a pet...no matter how it happens.

I don't know if it's feasible or available where you are, Caroline, but there are systems out there for pets that allow them the freedom of being outside, but prohibit them from going outside a boundary.  A type of electronic fence for animals.

That way they can still be outside, but without you having to worry about them escaping again...
