| Posted: | | | | I agree if the content of the discs is identical, otherwise the new disc should be added as an alternate version. | | | Last edited: by Gamemaster |

| Posted: | | | | The rules state when creating a new profile for contribution, the preferred method is to create from the UPC (or EAN) number.
The rules also state: "Studios occasionally re-release titles with the same UPC/EAN, but with changed content – for example Cover Images, Case Type and Overview. Subsequent releases are entered with an alternate version UPC/EAN."
I believe creating a single Disc ID profile is flawed, as the cover scans that go with it will show the EAN number and be rejected by the screeners as not complying with the rules.
You can't modify the original EAN profile and remove the first disc ID and replace it with the second disc ID, as that will create orphan EAN profiles for all the users that have the first disc ID (I'm assuming the first Disc ID was valid) and you can't add the second disc to the original EAN profile (that would imply there are 2 discs in the profile).
It won't matter whether the contents of the second disc are the same or different as the first disc, each disc will need a separate EAN profile and in this unusual scenario, you will need to create an alternate version EAN and modify the Disc ID to the second Disc ID and add its associated details and specifications.
The link to how to create an alternate version is: http://www.invelos.com/dvdpro/customhelp/changeupcguidelines.aspx
Hope that helps. |

Disc IDs . . .
If your Disc ID differs from the Disc ID in the main database, you may change it and re-contribute it. All Disc IDs are stored in the main database and are used for disc identification within DVD Profiler. |

| Posted: | | | | If the original EAN profile had an invalid disc ID then sax can replace it with the new disc ID (as per the rule quoted by dfmorgan above), but he must be able to prove the original Disc ID entry is wrong.
However, my understanding is sax has a duplicate EAN package with a different disc ID. He doesn't mention anything about the original EAN profile, so it can only be assumed it is a valid profile. My comments are based on this understanding of the problem.
The contribution rules start at "Introduction" followed by "What to Contribute", "Before you Contribute" and then the Profile construction sections (which includes the Disc ID rule quoted by dfmorgan above). The rules are meant to be read top-down, follow the instructions as laid out in the sequence written.
What to Contribute states the preferred method for creating a new profile is to use the UPC/EAN. If no UPC/EAN exists then add the title by Disc ID, using your DVD-ROM drive.
In the case with sax, he has a title with a EAN, so he must use a EAN profile by this rule. It's at the top of the rules, before you even start constructing a profile.
Before you Contribute states re-released titles using the same UPC/EAN but with changed content (in sax's case, a different Disc ID) are to be entered with a alternate version UPC/EAN profile. Again, this rule is invoked before the profile construction phase.
After creating your alternate UPC/EAN profile, you can proceed to the profile construction phase and invoke the rules associated with the various profile sections, including the Disc ID rule quoted by dfmorgan above.
Hope that clarifies the matter. |

| Posted: | | | | A different disc ID is not the same as different content. Before alternate versions existed different discIDs were stored in the existing profile as Dfmorgan correctly points out.
So if ALL content of the disc matches what is in the existing profile there is no need for an alternate version in my opinion just for a different disc ID. |

| Posted: | | | | OK, I now get it, after reading several discussions in the forum, I can see the Disc ID rule quoted is valid for re-released titles with same UPC/EAN and different disc ID (but same content).
So sax should implement the changes as recommended by the writers above.
My understanding is, if approved, the new disc will become the de-facto Disc ID for the UPC profile, with previous Disc IDs still linked to the UPC, but not visible in the program (I can only see one Disc ID in the profile, the last one recorded), is this correct?
Originally, my concern was it would over-write the original Disc ID, but I now realise it doesn't and I can still search by the original Disc ID and confirm it is still the same UPC :-)
But what happens, as Gamemaster suggested, when the new disc is different, do we create an alternate version or do we stick to the Disc ID rule?
What does "significantly different content" mean in the Alternate Version rule mean - is it limited to packaging changes or does it also include disc content changes?
Any feedback would be grateful for future reference - cheers :-) |
