| Posted: | | | | Whose idea was this ridiculous tool that some users are now using to change titles from what they should be according to the actual rules of English, to dumb lower cased versions?
Bringing up Baby? Really?
By the way, not meant to be an attack on users following the rules, but the rules themselves. The automatic name filters for capitalisation have also been a disaster IMO. | | | Last edited: by samuelrichardscott |

| Posted: | | | | I agree the decision made regarding 'Up' seems particularly strange. Can't argue with the Rules though. |

Your argument is invalid. |

There we go: those opposing views nicely illustrate why Ken chose to handle it this way. It isn't perfect to me either - I would have preferred "with" over "With", for instance - but endless going around in circles over what is "correct" or "proper" capitalization still doesn't seem preferable. With so many users being convinced that their way is the only "correct" or "proper" way, I can see why a plain and simple "Capitalization Tool", putting an immediate end to that, seemed like a good idea. In fact, that's exactly what happened: we were pretty much asked what we wanted but we couldn't reach a consensus - so this is what we got instead. |

Your argument is invalid. A word that looks like a preposition but is actually part of a verb is called a particle. Held up is a verb meaning “to rob.” Therefore, up is not a preposition, and bank is not the object of a preposition. Instead, bank is the direct object of the verb held up. |

| Posted: | | | | Nice there is no tool for the capitalization of our German titles. We can do how it should be correctly done and nothing does change automatic like in English titles. | | | * 3D TV Panasonic TX-P65VT30J + Blu-ray Player Panasonic DMP-BDT500 My Filmcollection online: www.filmkino.ch * |

Held up is a verb meaning “to rob.” Therefore, up is not a preposition, and bank is not the object of a preposition. Instead, bank is the direct object of the verb held up. Actually "up" in your example is an adverb (or adverbial particle). Held would be the past tense of the verb hold. The term article is a broad class of words which include most prepositions and conjunctions, and some interjections and adverbs Bring Up Baby, up is an adverb (toward the sky or a higher position) and according to grammar should be capitalized in titles. While the tool is not perfect, it does eliminate a lot of arguments. How many people can actually identify a preposition accurately? Even if they can, which rule should we follow? "With" is always a proposition. Some rules would capitalize and some would not. Who is right? Who is wrong? Ken decided, therefore he is right. We just adapt... Locally, I lock anything down that I know is correct grammatically. |

--------------- Up is down, black is white, cats and dogs living together! | | | My one wish for the DVD Profiler online database: Ban or remove the disc-level profiles of TV season sets. It completely screws up/inflates the CLT. FACT: Imdb is WRONG 70% of the time! Misspelled cast, incomplete cast, wrong cast/crew roles. So for those who want DVD Profiler to be "as perfect as Imdb", good luck with that. Stop adding UNIT crew! They're invalid credits. Stop it! |

Locally, I lock anything down that I know is correct grammatically. Yes, Bringing Up Baby should be capitalised which was my point! I do agree that it can be difficult to identify correctly, but usually someone will be along to do so eventually. It's a tough one, sure. However, I don't recall it being a particular issue over the issue so not sure what has caused it to be "fixed". |

What caused it to be "fixed" was that Ken wanted consistency within the database, and a discussion in the Contribution Rules Committee Forum caused Ken to decide that applying a filter was the most practical way of achieving that. --------------- |
