I have created multiple "special" categories, for example, one for 3D Movies, one for Atmos Movies, and one for Region B Movies - in addtion to the normal ALL and OWNED categories.  I have a few movies that might be Region B, 3D, and an ATMOS soundtrack.  Am I correct that a dvd can only belong to one "special" category and the OWNED category? If so, do other people have a way of dong something like this?

Thanks

That is correct as far as I am aware.

The only possible solution would be a plugin that creates shortcuts that can be placed directly into other categories (that would be pretty neat, actually!)

I believe you are correct as well.  I would suggest using the tag system to further categorize your collection.

You can create TAGS for your profiles.  These are very useful for the things you describe.  I use tags for things such as keeping track of which films have been nominated/won academy awards, or whether the profile is a box set or not, or to catalog what series a profile might belong to.  Tags are much more flexible than categories IMO.

Edit: See item (4) of Mithi's tutorial for the real power of Tags - using them in filters.

There is a small plugin, MyTools, which allows you to associate custom icons with filters and put the icons on a Toolbar. Then by simply clicking on an icon, you can quickly switch views of your collection to reflect any attribute that you are tracking with tags (or any other field).
Thanks for your support.

And "See item (3) of Mithi's tutorial for the real power of Tags - using them in filters" is in the same link?

Thanks!

Sorry, it is item 4!

And by the way, your original request is how I was hoping Ken would implement custom categories, back when it was in development. I always thought of the category as a "view" or property, whereas Ken has implemented the categories as "membership." This affects the database organization, so it is not easy to change now that it is implemented. I used to have a plugin that attempted to do the views, but it was slow and buggy. Now that we have better plugin tools, I could make it better, but alas I am too old and tired now...

I finally got around to setting up TAGS. I created one for Dolby Atmos, DTS-X, Region B discs, and 3-D discs.  And they work great! Thanks again!
