I do not order nearly as many DVDs as I used to, and the ones that I do order are usually from Amazon because I get many gift cards and benefits.

I got my late Christmas shipment in today, and EVERY. SINGLE. ONE. was in a garbage-quality case. It is bad enough that the plastic is so much thinner, but then they punch out the recycling symbol hole making them even more flexible.

Even a DVD that I ordered that is several years old was in one. I guess that they repackaged it.

Is it just me? Is it just Amazon?

I guess that I am going to have to order some cases now.

Not sure about DVD Cases because I rarely buy DVDs, almost exclusively blu-rays now.  But in the case of blu-rays more often than not they are the crappy eco-cases.  More and more they are going to eco-lite, which are thinner but at least don't have huge holes that can cause damage to the cover art.

At one time I replaced every single eco case, as well as the crappy vortex cases (type with hinge lock that doesn't lock half the time) with the classic Viva Elite blu-ray case.  I also ordered a bunch of standard DVD Cases to get rid of all the broken a, used cases I had.

I loathe eco cases. I can stand the kind that are thinner plastic, but the ones that have the holes in them are junk. The covers nearly always get messed up during shipping, or on Wal-Mart shelves, etc. The covers get warped, bent, dented, punched through.

At least most releases in the UK & Germany still seem to mostly use the non-eco cases...at least in my ordering experience.

I try to replace them whenever possible. Throw the others back in the recycle bin.

I don't especially like them as they feel too light and 'cheap' to handle and they do seem to make it more likely that the cover art will get damaged.

But...

I wish they were used for all cases; (from my experience they're more the exception than the rule in the UK at present).  I work for an environmental charity, so...

And pleassssssse, don't remind me that I'd be far less eco-unfriendly if I bought digital copies wherever possible.  As it is I have to flog myself with nettles every night as a punishment for this indiscretion; (except I don't because that would involve depriving some bugs of their nettle homes...).
Do you ever find yourself striving for perfection with an almost worthless attempt at it?  Guttermouth "Lemon Water".  Also, I include in my Profiler database VHS tapes, audio DVDs, audio books (digital, cassette and CD), video games (digital, DVD and CD) and 'enhanced' CDs with video tracks on them, as well as films and TV I've bought digitally.  So I'm an anarchist, deal with it.  Just be thankful I don't include most of my records and CDs etc in it too; don't think I haven't been tempted...

I'd be happy if they used the Eco-lite versions (no holes), I wouldn't feel as compelled to purchase replacement cases.  And please don't think for one second the studios are using eco cases for the environment, the major reason is that the eco-cases cost less.

Yeah, I don't even feel much of an urge to replace the ones with thinner plastic. I dislike them, but at least they rarely damage the covers.

It's the ones with the "holes" in them that are terrible. And then they often use Slip Covers in addition to the eco-cases... save the trees or plastic?

Again, I find it stupid for any company to take what was originally a standard case, and because eco-friendly is now the way to go, remove it, and move it to an eco-case. Doing so probably uses more energy than is saved by keeping them in the original cases.

I know this is true in at least some circumstances because I bought a DVD years ago that was fullscreen. A few years later I then bought the widescreen version which had originally been released on the same day. My new purchase was in an eco-case and missing the insert that the other contained.

A few years ago I was given several cases from the local rental store for free. They said they were getting rid of them anyway. Those cases are even stronger than the typical ones. I went back this week but they did not have any or had no idea what I was talking about.

I don't think they are actually re-packaging them. It's just a later charge that comes without the inlet and in a new casing.
