| | Posted: | | | | We all have heard about the dreaded April 8th date for a year now .. and this Tuesday that date will have arrived ... Heard yesterday that the worlds Operating systems are still 71% using Windows XP .. ! ... I Have Two PC and Two Iphones and One Ipad in my household .. and I am going to still use Windows XP on my my Desk/ floorstand PC .. my Laptop I have, is converted from windows 7 to windows 8.1 .. In February of this past winter I upgraded this XP PC to a New ( same brand ) Motherboard from ASRock., New Powersupply, Updated Memory by adding another 2 GB ., New 700 MB Sata drive and use my other three IDE / HD for a total of 1.4+ TB of space .. Reinstalled Windows XP Pro along with SP3 and some 270 updated patches ( in place drivers ) ., use Mcafee virus protection.., and the PC is running 99% Perfect and am very happy now after 7 weeks of this reinstall .. WHY did I want to stay with XP with the threat of No more support? .. Two reasons: one of my programs Money 98 is not supported (and I Hate all the 'sunrise' versions of Money) .. and second reason is I love Outlook 6 for email... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. The sun had set on Microsoft Money long ago as the last version released by MS was Money Plus (2008). However, you can still download a sunset version which requires no activation and the ability to import OFX and QIF files from your financial institutions. No automatic online downloads however. What Is Microsoft Money Plus Sunset? |

| | Posted: | | | | trouble is .. my annual money files (.mny extensions ) or ( yearly checkbooks) I have from 1999 to this year 2014 .. is not recognized with any other version of money .. plus the new versions rely heavily on downloaded files from your bank.. some banks don't support this and others do ( I have three checking accounts) .. if I want to know what month I fixed ( i.e.) the furnace back in 2005., or how much I spent on grocery's two years ago these files come in very handy . | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. Are you referring to the automatic downloads from FIs or the files which can manually be downloaded from FIs (such as OFX, QFX, QIF). I'm guessing you manually enter in all of your monthly transactions in Money 98? I still have a copy of Money 98 floating around somewhere but I'm guessing automatic downloads from financial institutions isn't supported at this point. |

No more support means no more OS security updates, which means a great chance of your "new" PC working at far less than 99% in short order. Of course a lot of that depends on your web browsing habits, but most people don't have prudent browsing habits. A better solution is to virtualize your existing PC and run it as a VM on a new Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installation. For this you will need another PC on your network (at least temporarily) that can install and run the free evaluation copy of VMware Workstation. Here are instructions on how to convert a physical PC to a virtual PC using VMware Workstation. Once you have your PC virtualized on another system you can install a newer OS on your hardware. When you have Windows 7 or 8.1 installed you can download the free VMware Player, copy the virtual machine folder from your converter PC, and run your old XP installation inside a virtual machine on your "new" PC. Remove all unnecessary software and data from the VM and disable networking (or at least Internet access) and it will be relatively safe. --------------- | | | | Last edited: by scotthm |

If you want to upgrade your money file(s) for the sake of potentially upgrading in the future then you should be able to download the MS Money 2005 minimal install version to convert the file(s) to the newer format. Those files can then be read by MS Money Plus Sunset which still allows manual entry of transactions. You cannot convert Money 99 or Money 98 data files into Money 2006 or later data files |

Granted, XP (like any other software) has vulnerabilities that the manufacturer isn't even aware of, which are nevertheless well known to hackers and crackers. But assuming that a hoard of crackers will now go on the hunt for XP-systems, just because M$ isn't releasing updates anymore is ... (for want of a better word) unrealistic. The hunt was on the day the first public beta was released, but this is true for any OS, and the more users a software has the more interesting it becomes for hackers. That's why OSs like Linux, MacOS, etc are considered to be "safe", which in this case doesn't mean "without vulnerabilities", but only "uninteresting for criminal exploits" due to a too low market-share. Taking into consideration that M$ needs (at an average) about two months from finding a leak to releasing the fix there is/was no reason to wait until EoL. It's not as if M$ found that many leaks on their own, and when the knowledge finally struck them those leaks (incl. exploits) were quite known to interested circles for a long time. All in All online-life has many similarities to real-life: There are areas that when visited have an elevated risk-level, other areas are quite safe, NOWHERE is totally safe. Or in other words: There is only one way for your computer to be entirely safe: Pull the CPU from the socket. EDIT: I dare to predict that in about 3 years WinXP will be among the "safest" OSs. Not because it actually would be safe, but simply because no cracker that has some self-esteem will go searching for new leaks in such an old-fashioned piece of software. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
