Just found out over facebook that my daughter Brittany put in an application... and was accepted to study abroad next semester. She will be going to London in September!

I must admit I am a little nervous about her being so far away where I can do very little to help her if needed. But more then that I am extremely proud and excited for her! She is only 18 and is already doing more with her life then I was ever able to do... what more can you ask from your child!

I swear... I couldn't be more proud this morning!

So all you people across the pond... what are the must sees in the London area? I am not sure how it is all going to work... but while she was visiting me last week she said she hoped to stay with a family while there. Guess it is something families volunteer to do... take in college students that study abroad?

If she likes music then she’d do well to go to a few gigs/concerts.  I’ve been going to see bands in London for longer than I can care to admit, but I’m still regularly going to new venues.  From backrooms in pubs to large halls, every evening there’s loads of choice.  And the vast majority of these end by 11:00pm, so people can get home on busses or trains/tube.

The Night Bus network in London is now really effective and very safe.  The Tube, despite its reputation for being a bit crappy, is actually very good too, except it closes down at night and can get really busy and slow in the rush hours.  She needs to lean all the ‘unwritten rules’ for using the Underground though!  (Google them.)

If she likes the countryside, the Chiltern Hills to the west of London and the North Downs and Surrey Downs to the south are both very beautiful places to visit.  Both areas are around 20-40 miles from central London.  September isn’t the best time to see the British countryside, but they’re still lovely areas and easy to reach by train.

We often seem to get very dry weather in September, so she should bring a raincoat!  Loads of people in London seem to be from other countries these days, or at least speak other languages a lot, so she’ll hear a real muddle of chat and accents from people in the streets and shops.

Oh I will be worried sick about her, of course!... but how can I not support her in it?
