Will, here in Middle Earth, we are expierencing major quake 6.6 and are having dozens of aftershocks up to the late 5's.
Nothing but constant shaking, and driving everyone nervious.

I was at work on L8 of our building, and it was 'fun' to say the least when the big one hit at 2:30pm.
This was bigger than the last one a month ago.
Managed to get out of city center early, which is now guid locked.

Just had a 5.5 aftershock centered just on our doorstep, a hell of a lot closer than the main one.
Keep you posted.

EDIT: go to http://www.geonet.org.nz/quakes/all to see for yourself. Wellington is basically right in the middle of the two islands. Seddon, where the bulk of the quakes are, is just across the water.

Are the businesses in your area structurally "quake proofed" or have there been major concerns and/or serious damage done to taller buildings as a result of swaying and vibration?

I hope that they end soon for you; earthquakes range from annoying to frightening.
If at first you don't succeed, skydiving isn't for you.

He who MUST get the last word in on a pointless, endless argument doesn't win. It makes him the bigger jerk.

As we are on a knowen Major fault line, building code has , at least in Modern times, quite strict on Eartquake proofing. Of course you can never build for the big 7+ quakes, but this time there was actually less damage than the last one.
We had our call center moved, and after their building had some repairs, were going to move back in this weekend. That is on hold now.

Here at home, other than a few new cracks in the external cladding, we are fine. Last time I had a big DVD rack pull the anchors out of the wall and move a couple of inches sideways. Did not fall over thankfully as was directly behind the wife.
We have 4 big china cabinets with...hold on another major 5 happening now  ....cat has headed under the table.
Anyway the cabinets have Artist Proof Lord of the Rings statues in them, and fortunately no damage yet, they are quite heavely secured to the walls.
