Are the subtitles removable 2. Is there a significant improvement on picture from DVD to BD? I asked one of the contributors; but they haven't replied; so I thought I'd ask in here. Many thanks  |

On question 1:
Judging from the back cover, both are releases from a major movie distributor (Sony / Columbia), with a slew of subtitle languages to choose from. These are released in many countries with different covers but the same physical disk. With such releases I have always found the subtitles can be switched off as well. Fair chance you'll find the English ratings logo on the physical disk, meaning that it is the same disk as released in the UK. With both releases region free, it could even be the same disk as released in the USA.
In my experience --but this isn't a garuantee-- you only need to worry about fixed subtitles if it is a minor --i.e. local, independent-- distributor that only offers the original language (with subs) and the local language. In DVD-times they used to add to the back cover 'nicht ausblendbare untertitel' (subtitles cannot be switched off) or something alike. But as said, no such thing with these titles. | | | Eric

So, an opinion of a fellow Profiler user would mean more to me than other sites/people. However, despite a PM to main contributor, no one has replied.  Guess I'll take the risk. |

E.G.: There is a sign to be seen advertising some product and this gets translated by subtitle.
I find this extremely annoying. It doesn't occur all too often though. | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

a. if there are multiple subtitle languages present (3 or more), the disk, DVD or BR, uses the standard mechanisms to switch or cancel subtitles. Via menu or the remote.
b. if there are only subtitles in the local language, serious chance these are fixed.
Applies to, at least, French and German titles. Rest of Europe, I do not know.
Some old style DVD's (my estimate produced before 2005) try to enforce a subtitle or language choice via the menu and block any effort to set it via the player's remote. If they forgot to add 'no subtitles' to the menu or your player cannot bypass this sort of programming, you're out of luck. Haven't seen such titles in recent years, though. | | | Eric

I'm going to stick my neck out though, and say how surprised I am that the 2 people who actually seem to own this title (the contributors) can't take a few minutes to let me know what they think of the picture quality. The one thing I would never have called the DVDP community was unhelpful. Ah well. Times change. |

Another explanation might be that people might still be on holidays without access to their collection and/or email. I don't know about German holiday seasons (these are German releases, right?). | | | | Last edited: by dee1959jay |
