Jane Doe has made 15 movies, always under her real name.

Then she married John Deer.

Then she made 16 more movies.

Now her common name is "Jane Deer".

As of now, changing the common name from "Jane Doe" to "Jane Deer" has no effect on these 15 first movies.

I have to seperately open every single one of them and change them from "Jane Deer" to "Jane Deer [Jane Doe]".

When I change a common name, it would be nice of DVDP to ask me if I want to automatically create a Credited As credit with the old common name in all the existing profiles that don't have a Credited As set already.

I'm hoping that Ken will come up with a better system that does away with common names altogether, but barring that: +1

I had a quite similar problem a few days ago with The Sopranos:
The acress that played Meadow Soprano changed her Name due to marriage between Season 5 and Season 6 Part 1. After Season 6 Part 1 she and her husband got seperated and she changed her name back for Season 6 Part 2. So of seven profiles I had six with one name and only one with the other.

Couldn't this be done easier, if it was implemented through a menu option for cast and crew editing, outside of the profile editor?

Couldn't that be quite a big source for errors? I guess Jane Doe is only an example but let's take Pamela (Denise) Anderson (Lee) - no matter what her common name was or is if it ever changed at all. The main problem ist that there is not one name that could be put into the "credited as" field automatically. So you still have to check how a person really was credited as.

Same goes for countless other people, mostly women I guess, like the one from the Sopranos who's name changed back to her maiden name and there is also the problem of a "timeline". At least if that person made movies with the old & new name in the same 'production' year, not to mention that DVD aren't always released or bought in a chonological order.

That should have been checked when the credits have been added. If she's credited with another name than her common name, credited as is added to the profile. The only time there is no credited as data is, when she's credited with her actual common name. When common name changes and credited as is empty, you have to copy her old common name into credited as field.

For your example:

previous common name: Pamela Anderson Lee
movie 1: Pamela Anderson Lee credited as Pamela Anderson
movie 2: Pamela Anderson Lee
movie 3: Pamela Anderson Lee credited as Pamela Denise Anderson

new common name: Pamela Anderson
movie 1: Pamela Anderson credited as Pamela Anderson (maybe credited as data has to be removed?)
movie 2: Pamela Anderson credited as Pamela Anderson Lee (here you got the old common name copied to credited as)
movie 3: Pamela Anderson credited as Pamela Denise Anderson

I think the most simple solution would be to avoid empty credited as data at all. If no credited as data has been entered, the program could copy the name into credited as field automatically.
