PlanetAxel.com is no more!

It is with great sadness, deep regret and utter embarrassment that we announce the closure and bankruptcy of PlanetAxel.com

On Monday afternoon, June 18th, 2012 the board of directors have informed us that no further investment will be made in the company. This comes in light of the recently finished 2011 financials which showed such an insurmountable deficit and loss to company value that a swift decision was made almost overnight. We have been asked to provide a quick summary/FAQ of your options as a previous customer of PlanetAxel.com with respect any outstanding orders/refunds.

If you have SHIPPED orders according to your order history but you have not received them yet
We have shipped out orders as late as the morning of Monday June 18th. If you order history lists your order as SHIPPED, then it has indeed shipped. If you are still to receive shipped orders, we would suggest waiting roughly 10-12 weekdays in which case 99% of all shipped orders will definitely have arrived.

If you have prepaid orders that have not yet shipped according to your order history
We will refund and delete all outstanding orders. Having said that; as this is a case of bankruptcy we fear that our accounts may be frozen at some point in the near future.

IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED YOUR REFUND BY MONDAY JUNE 25TH:

You must put in a claim with your bank, PayPal or Visa/MasterCard. For most customers this would be an issue for their local bank. Print this page and a statement with highlighted transactions. Tell them that you have paid for products using your credit card that you haven't received. Some banks will tell you that you have to file such claims within a 1-2 month period. THIS IS NOT CORRECT! Both Visa and MasterCard offer a THIRTEEN MONTH worldwide grace period for such claims. Be sure to INSIST on that despite what your bank teller may tell you!

If you have a voucher outstanding or have outstanding orders paid in full by a voucher
The voucher is unfortunately lost.

On a personal note I would like apologize to everyone that will be somehow affected or inconvenienced by this matter. I've spend half my life with the company (18 years in total) and it all ended today. This is not 'just business' to me, but sincerely personal. I can honestly say that this has been a sad, sad day for all of us here at the office but the fact that so many suppliers, affiliates, employees and most important of all, customers are affected by this bankruptcy is almost unbearable.

On behalf of everyone at PlanetAxel.com I offer my sincerest and heartfelt apologies and thank you for your support over the years.

With sincerest regards,

Rasmus Christiansen, General Manager

That is sad. While they were rather expensive for most items they service was excellent at all times. Rasmus was taking care of my orders and I am sad to hear this news.

I never used them, but it is sad that so many companies have been going bankrupt the past few years.

Another group of employees who now need to suddenly find another job.

I'll surely miss them. Rasmus was a great guy to do business with. And he just had his first baby. Lousy timing to lose his job...

Don't know where to turn now. Amazon, I guess, but they're just so impersonal compared to Axel. A sad day.

Bummer, I used to buy all my Roger Corman Cult Classics from them. I had an 8€ voucher on my account, which is now lost.

All in all, I've bought over 100 movies from them. Sad to see them go out of business.

I just looked and I have a 12-page order history with them starting in 2004 (back when they were called Axel Music). But I haven't bought anything since last November...

I guess DVD sales are slowly dying and Blu-ray never took off in the same way DVD did.

I see another reason: their prices just weren't competitive anymore

In the past I ordered quite a few Blu-rays with them. Reason? Price:
Axel's price < Amazon US + shipping + import taxes
But for the past year or so:
Axel's price > Amazon US + shipping + import taxes

And I think that's what's done them in. I also see that I only ordered once with them in the past year whereas I used to order regularly with them before that. Their prices are simply too high compared to Amazon and the likes.

Still, sad to see them go out of business as they've always treated me in a very customer-friendly way

Sadly for Axel, but I have to agree with Taro. Prices forced me to order considerably less there in recent months.

Same. Used to order weekly but just twice in 2011/2012 combined.

Were prices really all that good in the past?

I had never even visited the site before and you guys talk about it as if ordering there more than anyone else and knowing the owner personally.

The prices of the few things that I looked up when I read this news were way over the price of places like Amazon.

I don't suppose their prices were competitive for US customers but when ordering from Europe you also have to take taxes and import duties into account, and ordering from Axel meant you didn't have to pay those in most cases because they were prepaid and the items were remailed from within the EU. So in many cases ordering from Axel was cheaper than ordering for example from amazon.com.

As KinoNiki says, for us in Europe, yes. Usually they were cheaper than DVDPacific, Amazon, Movietyme, PlayUSA and even CD-Wow back in the day. They were no DVD Soon, but we all remember how that ended
