| | Posted: | | | | I recently made purchase where I'm dubious about it's authenticity and would appreciate some suggestions.
The DVD is Bernard and the Genie (018619-960899) and was bought from Amazon Marketplace. My main concern with the DVD is the the cover is completely different to that of the release in the database (and I'm not able to find it on-line) and the quality of the cover isn't great.
However, the correct distributor logo is on the packaging, along with the correct barcode, copyright text, etc. The disc appears to have been pressed (not burned) and the disc ID is recognized as the correct release in DVD Profiler. It's also acknowledged that the print is not a great quality on the 'real' release, and the quality of the cover could simply be due to this being a cheap release.
One thing to note is that the disc says 'Made in Canada', so could this be Canadian locality release? Equally may not be relevant at all. I looked through many of the comments on the seller, and there was no complaint about any of their products being bootlegs.
Knowing nothing about the distributor (Wham! USA), I have no clue how likely this is to just be a re-release with a different cover or what the quality of their standard releases is.
Opinion? Is this likely to be a boot or legit?

| | Posted: | | | | I think Wham USA! is one of those dubious companies that release films they do not own the rights to along with some that they do. They are run by the same guy who runs Jef Films, a reasonably dodgy company. Televista and Morningstar are other companies from these guys and even recently they 'tried' to release a Goodies DVD which they didn't license from the BBC. Seemingly they have links in the UK with Blackhorse Entertainment but I couldn;t really find much info. Anyway, somehow these guys get their discs into stores just like a bunch of other similar companies. A good site for in-depth info on bootleggers:

I just came back from a garage sale where they had DVDs in those huge booklets and almost all of them had Chinese writing on them in addition to the US title.
Needless to say I knew they were bottlegs and didn't buy a single one.
I think it takes a lot of guts to selll Chinese imports/AKA Bootlegs at a garage sale. |
