I hear a lot of good feedback from the region free Oppo's. However, I didn't opt for that as:
- it's more expensive
- needs hardware modification (I don't like that so much)
Instead I opted for a Panasonic DMP-DBT310 with custom firmware:
- no hardware modifcation needed
- cheaper
- great quailty player
- double HDMI out meaning I don't need to change my receiver to play 3D BD's (one HDMI for video, one for audio)
Finally, regarding the custom firmware, you need to apply at this site:
http://www.firmwareinfo.com
They are very fickle about applications so before you get started, better to read in detail how to apply and get your Paypal ready to fire. If you don't complete all the steps of the process in one hour, your account gets deleted.
I did it and worked like a charm! I can enter a code and set my Panasonic to any DVD region and Blu-ray region with a simple button press on my remote.

The custom firmware costs about 30 Euros, so it's definitely affordable given what you can do with it.

| | Posted: | | | | When BDs first came out I bought a Samsung, Amazon's deal of the day because OPPO's BD player was not out yet. After awhile it stopped working, I sent it off o LA and they fixed it for free. But it is not working again.
Bought a Panasonic it stopped working. Both are out of warranty.
Then I bought:
LG Black Blu-ray/HD DVD-ROM & 16X DVD±R DVD Burner SATA Model GGC-H20L
I have a LG in my PC since BDs came out.
I finally got my OPPO BDP-93, that and the LG players are still working. I am retired and I consider my job is to watch as many dvds as I can, so they get a lot of play.
Over the years a I bought 3 OPPOs, various models and they all still work. | | | We don't need stinkin' IMDB's errors, we make our own.

| | Posted: | | | | The oppo hardware mod is the best option because you can still update your firmware without killing the region free capability of the player. I have a momitsu that is region free but I can't update my firmware because the latest firmware takes that away. There are also some insignia players that are region free if you use an older firmware plus some panasonic models are reported to be able to play region B blus but no DVDs from other regions. Those panasonic players can't play pal or 1080/50i content.

Unusually each disc player has key you press to go into setup mode. The manufacturers web site has all the instruction. Once you start the process you can not touch anything or turn it off the player until it is finished..
