| | Posted: | | | | Hi, looking for ideas for the following problem: An error occurred while backing up a database. Now Profiler shows no profiles in the database and the restore fails during "Restoring custom credit photos" resp. during "Skipping custom credit photos" (Apparently non-profiler files somehow got into the "CreditPhotos" Folder which must have caused the crash). All the database files are still there and the restore window shows all titles. So this information is still there ... just where is it? I guess I will have to build a new db now; a list of titles would be of great help. If the restore can still read them it's got to be possible to extract that information somehow ... I hope? Any ideas?  |

Didn't there use to be a placeholder in the Cast/Crew windows when there is no photo for that person? It's there in the "cast information" overview, but not in the detail frame right above the cast list ....  |

| | Posted: | | | | Have you tried just unchecking the "Restore custom credits photos" check box in the restore window? If that's the step at which it fails, then you should hopefully be able to restore everything except for the custom credits photos.
If that does't work, I'd uncheck one other box and try again. If it fails again, then work your way through the checkboxes one at a time and try to restore again. If it keeps failing, hopefully at least it will work when only "Restore profiles" is checked.
And if that too fails, I'd suggest starting a blank database and downloading your collection from your online list. That can be done via Online -> DVD Profiler Online, and selecting "Download" when prompted. | | | Tags, tags, bo bags, banana fana fo fags, mi my mo mags, TAGS!

| | Posted: | | | | Astrokan mentioned this, but I think it is also applicable to Mithi's advice: always start any recovery or restore operations from a new clean database, instead of loading an existing one and attempting to overwrite. I'm almost certain I can remember Ken giving this advice during Beta debug cycles.
@Greenmiller, given all the available methods, there should virtually no cisrcumstance where one needs to start from scratch - short of losing all your backups, all copies of collection.XML and the online simultaneously.
I mean you can even rebuild a database from old flag sets, which are simply text file lists of profileIDs - in this case, you don't get personal info, but it is a quick start.
In summary, you can automatically rebuild from (in order of quality):
All of these can preserve personal info
- Restoring a backup into a clean database
- Restoring from the online into a clean database
- Using BulkEdit to import into a clean database a CSV file created by CSV Export or collection.xml created from DVDP Export
Finally, for a quick start without personal info
- Use native DVDP bulk import of a UPC list. This list can be barcode scanned, typed manually, or recovered from old flag sets
- Use BulkEdit to bulk import Profile IDs and preliminary personal info from a CSV file generated using Excel
- Use BulkEdit - ScrapeGoat to grab bunches of DVD profile IDs from other Online collections of users that have similar tastes and thereby have many of the same items in their collections
There may be other good options if you also own one of the mobile solutions, but I have not personally tested them. | | | Thanks for your support.

| | Posted: | | | | Thank you all for your good advice! I've recovered an old version of the backup from a windows image. That gives me a good start. My collection is not online, was never exported to Excel and in large parts the profiles were custommade, because it contains old video recordings that never made it to DVD. Live and learn  Have a good one! |
