I don't rent, so it's a non-issue to me.

Move over to Germany.
Here the movies go into rental-stores first (for about 1 month) before they go on sale.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

agreed.. People rent first and if the title is good they may buy new or used ..  Our compassion for buying and saving catalog titles in another room is to some.., not nessessary as they would say.. How many titmes are you going to watch that film?.. Once?  twice and then what .?.

Rentals are still very much alive to most ,, and to double that window from 28 days to 56 is unrealistic ..

It will be realistic as soon as they do it.

People who can't wait a few more days to watch a film need to excercise a little self control.

56 days is also the time span it needs to have most DVDs moved from the (full-price) front shelves to the 1$-bin.
So if I had the choice of renting for $1 or actually owning the disc for the same price, guess which one I would pick?
In other words: This 56 days time span will be the end of movie rental in the US-market
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!

Family Video refuses to agree to waiting 30 days or more to rent a disc, so where I live, Family Video just gets their discs from a distributer that supplies retailers, or, barring that, from an actual retailer. This has the double benefit of being the actual disc with all the correct features, and not some stripped down rental form aimed at punishing consumers who chose to rent instead of buy.
