| Posted: | | | | I've submitted a number of DVDs to the database and was denied witht he following message:
An invalid source, such as a third party database, was listed in the contribution notes. Use of a third party database is not allowed per the contribution rules.
I use only reliable sources such as commercial websites and the Internet Movie Database. My question is how are these not allowed? I can understand a listing site such as "listmania" or 'maybe' even wikipedia, but, IMDB?
Could someone please explainee this to me? |

| Posted: | | | | Depends on the info, but for cast and crew we only take from the opening/end credits. Third party sites like IMDb are not allowed. They charge a hefty fee to use the info and even so, it's notoriously unreliable... | | | Last edited: by The Movieman |

| Posted: | | | | We cannot use imdb for legal reasons... as you have to license it from them... which invelos does not do. What you want to do is check the rules for contributing: RULESPer the rules the cast and crew can come from only one place if you wish to contribute the information. You have to put the disc in a player and actually watch the beginning and end credits on the film itself... and copy cast and role names exactly as in the actual credits. From people using more then 1 form of their name you must use the CLT to find the most commonly credited form and use the credited as field for exactly as in the credits. | | | Pete |

Under 'Credits' those state really unambiguously: "Take Crew Credits from the film credits only;" Quote: I use only reliable sources such as commercial websites and the Internet Movie Database. First of all, IMDB is notoriously unreliable. Secondly IMDB itself prohibits you from using their data for DVD Profiler. cya, Mithi | | | Mithi's little XSLT tinkering - the power of XML --- DVD-Profiler Mini-Wiki |

| Posted: | | | | Thank you for the explaination. It has been awhile since I contributed and used to take the cast from the credits, I guess I'm going back to that. I am sorry for not having kept up with the rules and will make sure I follow them from now on. |

The best advice I can offer you is as noted follow the Rules. Make your Contribution as detailed and concise as possible. Remember your notes become a part of the permanent record for any given title, the bibliograp[hy if you will. So six months from now what will those notes say to someone just looking at them for the first time. For example iof you are using the CLT and do not provide sufficient info such as results from the tool what does that tell anyone. Or if you are including an uncredited are you providing sources that back up your claim. Key word that I used here was bibliography, such as that found in a book, when an author is citing sources to back up informantion he provides in his book, same thing here with your nmotes. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! For example: If there was a M.J. Watson in the database but the more common name is Michael J. Watson then one should at least provide the info that M.J. is not Spider-Man's girlfriend and therefore a totally different person altogether. | | | Karsten DVD Collectors Online
