Has any one seen this new camera from Lytro? It's amazing . It's called a Light Field Camera and captures the entire light field allowing the user to actually focus the image after-the-fact in post processing. It's supposed to be available for purchase in early 2012 but you can pre-order now. The 16GB model (750 pictures) goes for $499 US .

That's one sweet camera.  Can't wait to hear some reviews for it.

My interst is certainly piqued! Thanks.

I couldn't find what dimensions the resulting images will have. The screen is square, so will images be square at first, for later cropping (if so desired...)? the screen seems a tad small for a touch screen, but that is a minor complain.

From what I've been able to gather poking around the net, the final image size is currently 1080x1080, which is roughly 1.2 megapixels. That would be ok for sharing via email and Facebook, but not for any serious photography. At 1.2 megapixels the best you could hope for is a 6x4 print at 200dpi or 3x2 at 300dpi.

I've also read that there are other drawbacks to this camera that I wasn't at first aware of when I posted this thread. No Windows software yet is a big one...it's currently in developement. Right now you'd need or have access to a Mac to process the photos. Also, if you want to share the photos to Facebook, you have to upload them to Lytro's web site first...don't ask me why . Also, the storage media isn't removeable which means the only way to get the photos off the camera is via USB...no WiFi either.

It's a cool concept but it's still in it's infant stages. Personally, I'm holding off until I see how this camera operates in the "real world" and see if there are any improvements in the near future.

This is not a new idea (look up "plenoptic camera") however, it does look a little more manageable for your John and Jane Doe consumer than the other consumer-level model that I've seen.

Pretty sweet.

That is still rather small images. The software is not an issue to me (I own a Mac) but I also was slightly irritated when I saw the comments about having to upload images to their site and that the image transfer possibilities are very limited. I think this will have to wait until a more usable model comes out a few years later. I like the concept though.

Keep in mind that you are comparing ripe apples to new apples.

Les than a decade ago, 1024x768 images weren't considered "small" when it came to making the standard digital camera ready in order to build popularity for consumer use. The fact that much larger resolution cameras can fit into your tiny cell phone now just shows the typical advancement of that technology.

The same will happen here if the product idea becomes popular enough to warrant additional investments in improving it.
