| Posted: | | | | I wanted to double check something because I voted NO on a submission but there seems to be a conflict with DVD profiler and I wanted to see if this had been covered before
As we all know NTSC/PAL is an encoding and not part necessarily one media type or another.
The submission in question the media type was changed to "DVD" from "Blu-ray" so they could change it tag it as NTSC.
I checked profiler and evidently you can only select NTSC or PAL if you use the DVD media type which is a bug in my oopinion.
Now the dsic in question is in fact physically a Blu-ray so I voted NO because from my understanding the media type defines the disc format. However you can have Blu-ray TV series in either NTSC or PAL which is why I think there is a bug in profiler on this.
Now was I correct in voting NO or does the work around to show NTSC or PAL trump the media type? |

| Posted: | | | | BD discs do not store ntsc or pal. It is stored in the original video mode. It is the player that converts it if necessary (and if you are using hdmi, it won't convert it there either).
In bd, you should never be able to select NTSC or Pal, as neither exist in that media type, DVD profiler handles that perfectly on BD only formats.
Where I think a bug exists is in the combo packs. Since the rules state that the parent is the bd version, the check boxes for that should also be disabled.
So in response, the no vote should have been for the media change (since it was BD). If the media change wasn't done, then the media format would not have been an option.
My understanding

| Posted: | | | | You're mistaken. NTSC and PAL are standard-definition formats. While you could put out a Blu-ray of SD material, to my knowledge no one has done so, because it would be pointless. The only place you'll see NTSC and PAL on Blu-rays is special features, which isn't what we're profiling in video format. The reason the program won't let you select NTSC and PAL on Blu-rays is they are neither NTSC nor PAL. We don't profile the different HD formats as of yet. |

The reason the program won't let you select NTSC and PAL on Blu-rays is they are neither NTSC nor PAL. We don't profile the different HD formats as of yet. Being a fan of some UK TV series I know for a fact of several BBC releases on Blu-ray that are encoded in PAL. And they will only play on a BD player with a PAL decoder. Now in the US not many brands are sold with PAL decoders. So it happens to more than just special features. But I would bet that it is not that big of an issue to the profiler users. PAL and NTSC are encoding formats and can be on a BD just as 3D-BD. Now I can see that if profiler is not supportng those at this time then that addresses my statement about it being a bug. However from what I am reading is that I was correct in my NO vote because the contributor changed the Media type to DVD, just so they could do the notation of NTSC. I just wanted to make sure I did not vote incorrectly | | | Last edited: by Scooter1836 |

| Posted: | | | | I don't think they exist unless they have started to release SD on Blu-ray. There are some 50Hz 1080i releases but that is not PAL, it's a broadcast originated HD format just like 60Hz 1080i is in the US. But that is something we don't profile since we can't select between different HD field rates.
The question here is: Was the profile that got changed a combo release or not? If it is a combo then PAL/NTSC will be automatically ticked in the profile and can not be removed even if you want to. Just ignore it or think about it as valid only for the DVD part of the combo. If it isn't a combo then changing it to an incorrect media type is of course never acceptable. | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 | | | Last edited: by Nexus the Sixth |

Absolutely vote No. The Media type is fundamental to the physical architecture of the disc and should not be changed for anyone's convenience. | | | Bad movie? You're soaking in it! |

| Posted: | | | | A side note; NTSC and PAL is also disabled for custom media types. I profile my VHS and laserdiscs, so it would be nice to add NTSC and PAL for these. Since custom media can't be submitted, there's no reason for having any restrictions on them. | | | |

| Posted: | | | | The media type is for the main feature and not the extra features, so NTSC and PAL don't apply to BD. All HD will play anywhere if it's not region locked. I have a few BD's from what would be region B that play fine on my region A player. If I try to watch the extra features (in PAL), I just go back to the menu. Thankfully I can view these on my computer which doesn't care if PAL or not. |
