To encourage people to hurry up and buy their copies by Christmas. They are trying to encourage artificial demand by restricting availability.

Is this tactic really useful these days? I understand in the days of VHS, vaulting a movie would be no problem, but now that everything is digital and most movies can be found on torrent sites or usenet, seems like they're just hurting themselves.

Wonder if this strategy will be applied to other catalogue titles. The Harry Potter franchise i imagine would be the bench mark to test it's affectiveness.

But if it is rolled out on a wider bases, it would be a nightmare for us collectors.

Watch this space i say.

$5 bet for the first 3 who want it...

They will be back on shelves by X-Mas 2013.
I'll also bet 1 vs 5 they are back next X-mas but think WB might wait at least one year, hench the odds. I'll take 10 of these bets (got to limit losses in case ).

I am so not running out and buying any of them. Still only seen the first myself, just wasn't my thing.

I did ask myself the same question.

Well, that the movie industry seems to be incapable and/or unwilling to accept that the world has changes isn't really new.

I for one will do the same I always did: if HP7.1 and HP7.2 are available for under 10€ each I'll buy, otherwise I don't and I won't lose one second of sleep if they are "not available" by stupid marketing f-up.

According to The Digital Bits, it will be 2012 when they come back out.
"Hard-core Potter fans will be pleased to know that 2011 is not the end of the Harry Potter film franchise on DVD and Blu-ray. Warner Home Video plans to release a comprehensive Harry Potter film collection, with even more extras and collectible premiums in 2012. More details about the collection will be available at a later date."

Saw this on another board but it bears repeating...now if only they'd lock the Twilight movies in the vault.

Inflate demand by limiting supply and inflate demand by "re-releasing" after a period of unavailability.

At first I thought it seemed counter productive as they would lose the money that went into the initial pressing of the discs but then it occurred to me that they could re-use those discs in the re-release. The only real loss would be the printed cover.

I imagine, like Disney, they will not pull the manufactured discs from shelves. Most Disney products stay on shelves for a while after distribution ends until all products sell out. So, no discs or covers in storage.
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.
