| Posted: | | | | Just a small question which may expand to several pages.
As we all know the current Blu-Ray release of the Star Wars franchise differs in many ways from what was originally to be seen in the cinemas. It even differs from the so-called "Special Editions" which already were a Rerelease of the original three parts, but those "Special Editions" introduced the new names for the parts (Remember the originals didn't have the "Episode XX" in the title.
So which Production Year do we use for DVDProfiler purposes? | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up! But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

| Posted: | | | | Well, the rules still say: Quote: For films that have been updated (e.g., a Special Edition or Directors Cut) use the year of the original release, not the year that the re-release was “made” or released. I would say these qualify as "films that have been updated", so there's the answer. | | | Last edited: by T!M |

So the original 1977/80/83 SW prints that have never been released to DVD and contain no extra scenes or dialogue (over the special edition and the 'Only' current available prints) would be considered Production Year and the 1997 special editions of these films would not be listed as 1997 but Production years of originals...?? I have my Sp ed of SW as 1997 as that was the year they were first seen as they are now .. Now what about Apocalypse Now Redux had a screening date of 2001 with an additional 49 minutes of footage but would that film be Production Year 1979 or 2001 ?? BTW.. a Little bit of local nostalgia here for you.. In Vancouver 1977 there were no 70 mm projectors and no 6 track dolby surround sound systems .. so we here in those days were stuck with 35 mm prints in stereo only. If we wanted to see the Big Picture we had to drive 320 Km south to Seattle to visit Star Wars .. Now this all changed in May 1980 when 'Empire' came out- the Theatres were equiped and ready to go .. BUT in 1981 Star Wars finally came to video- Beta / laser disc and VHS Hifi surround (for those that had the receivers,) and they were also 'letterboxed' at the panavison aspect ratio of 2.35:1 .. ... and I can remember to this day saying to all my friends if you didn't go to Seattle to see this film but saw it 15 times in the last 4 years .. " You haven't seen Star Wars as it was intended to be seen and Heard .." Not until 1997 did we get to see it in 70 mm 6 track dolby surround and THX ... Star Wars was also the Very first movie that PAYTV in Canada premiered in the mid 80's , but it was shown in Pan and scan ... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. ( **I guess no one saw this , will attempt to keep this post alive for a few more hours until it disappears onto Page two .. ) --- So just watched on BravoTV E.T. The Extraterrestrial which also ties into last weeks discussion.., but was looking for differance between the 1982 and the 2002 release as I feel that Spielberg will never release or broadcast the original 1982 release as the differances shown here ,,, . So getting back to the topic in Hand .. I think with differences in story line ( no mention of Terrorists or FBI branding shotguns and handguns in pursuit of children).,, CGI effects , and additonal house scenes that ran the film a furthur 5 minutes ..I feel that the Directors cut of E.T. should be Production year of 2002 and not 1982 .. and the original version only available as the second disc of the set of the Collectors edition as a true 1982 Produciton release .... I have boxed this set with Disc ID's of these release's so when I want to mark the movie as 'watched' .. I am watching or 'tagging' the right edition .. Today I watched the 2002 edition and three and half years ago on a Sunday in March I also watched the DVD of the 2002 edition ... | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. | Posted: | | | | But the 'original release' of that edited version would be 2002 not 1982 .. besides that the complete Title would be changed to Directors Cut Or Directors Editon wouldn't be a red flag for changes to Running time, cast, crew ( the ending credits give all the names for the restoration) ., Overview, and .. Year .. . If you use the Restoration crew credits for 1982 it wouldn't make any sense .. There wasn't any Directors Cut in the Year 1982 .. nor the 1988 Video release ..
I agree in hindsight that the original screen date/production year of said title would be 1982; But the In House Production ( Restoration) and original screen release of Directors cut would be different if we were to 'profile' the DVD as profiling keeps the DVD data in line with what is original and what is Directors cut .. Maybe in future versions of Profiler we may need an additional field for Re released versions .. | | | In the 60's, People took Acid to make the world Weird. It doesn't matter as the rule, once again, is quite clear: For films that have been updated (e.g., a Special Edition or Directors Cut) use the year of the original release, not the year that the re-release was “made” or released.
