Today, I opened my DVD Profiler and I noticed I suddenly have all those birth years behind the actors names, which aren't necessary. How come? I haven't put them there and I haven't downloaded. Is that a bug? Strangely enough there are a lot in some tv shows and some others haven't.

Did you download the Headshot database?  I don't know if it is still the case, but that used to cause this problem.

The HSDB's released by me in the HSDB thread (first post only) only has valid BY's in them (either acknowledged by Invelos or document in the BY thread as valid). However, any other HSDB posted by other users may or may not have invalid BY's.

Also, people are adding valid BY's to many profiles. If you download any of those profiles, you would receive the BY updates as well.

Thanks for the confirmation.  I thought that someone...seems it was you...had a version without the invalid BYs, but wasn't sure.

He says he hasn't downloaded, so the HSDB was the only thing I could think of.

Hi!

Thanks for your answers, but no, I didn't do anything with headshots. Yesterday it was all fine. It seems only two shows have them, but I locked 'Actors' a long time ago, so nothing would happen to them. Seems I have to delete them one by one.

If I understand how it works, they don't actually download per profile so locking them won't help.  If you happen to add a new title, and that title has BYs included in the cast, those BYs will attach to your local actor list.  That means, any profile with that actor will now have that BY.

This would have been my idea, too.

Did you add any new profile with this persons?
There are some BYs that made it into the database, but are unnecessary. For example those:

Sad and annoying but absolutely true. I've just added Hurlyburly (4-006680-035963) to my collection and that single profile messed up a whole bunch of other 'famous' actors than mentioned at the BY Topic part linked by VirusPil:

Sean Penn, Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright Penn, Meg Ryan, Anna Paquin, Chazz Palminteri

Anyway, is there a good way to 'defend' against this behaviour of the Profiler?

Sadly not. (I don't know a way.)
You can always just hope and sometimes vote for the correct entry.

Btw, Sean Penn seems to be correct with BY:

The best way to defend against this behavior is to have BYs in your local, and make sure they are correct.

Alternatively, just ignore BYs. Ken has recently hidden parsing information during downloads, and that seems to quiet down a lot of the discussions.
