This is not directly addressed in the rules, so here goes.

Imagine that I have both a sealed DVD in my hand and also an exactly matching scan on my hard drive of the cover from a source not claiming ownership or copyright restriction (cdcovers.cc).

Opening the DVD (which I've done so far) renders it used (not new) and therefore less valuable for sale or trade.

Do we have a specific policy against simply cropping out the relevant portion of the pre-scanned image for submission, or is more like "don't be dumb enough to tell us where you got this when submitting"?

There is no problem submitting cover scans from another source as long as they do not have copyright data on them.

I often see DVD covers and data submitted for DVDs that have not been released yet.

So I'm confused here because many covers express a copyright over the art design of the cover.

A copyright logo is applied by certain companies (such as empire.com) on their images and invelos does not allow these images into the database.

At times these covers have gotten accepted into the database and should be removed when found.

I just checked the rules and invelos calls this stamp a water mark: "Images must not contain extra watermarks, autographs, or site links."

This goes farther than my original question, but is good to know.

I was thinking that I could provide a better scan for any cover that is currently in the database. This now brings things into question.

If the scan is an exact match, and isn't water marked, I don't see a problem.  Though some might have you believe otherwise, the rules do not require that you scan the image yourself, only that it matches "the profile exactly, including the UPC and locality."

If you can offer to upload an improved cover image than currently exists in the online database, then by all means feel free to submit it.

Just make sure that you detail the differences when you upload the scans, for the benefit of both those voting and Invelos staff whose job it is to approve the images.

I regularly submit initial pre-release profiles with retailer-sourced images, and follow them up later with improved data and higher resolution scans. This is important, as cover designs sometimes change a little between pre-release and what actually hits the stores.

Indeed, someone who can regularly offer improved quality cover scans is an asset to the database, as not everyone owns a scanner.

I've had to use cdcovers.cc a few times for ex-rents with damaged or no covers. I cannot recall ever seeing a watermark on a scan from there, but be sure to double-check the UPC. Many scans are from Europe, and many US versions there have UPC's different than the common US releases. At least 5 times I've been about to use one of their scans and then saw the UPC was off.

I've also used covers from r1db.com. These I know don't have watermarks or they aren't hosted (the previews have marks, but I have many credits from submitting scans myself). In fact, I have so many extra credits now, I'll take a few requests for better cover scans (if r1db has em).
