| | Posted: | | | | Two numbers that gave me something to think: New releases for the next three months in Germany (Source: Amazon.de) DVD: 1023 BluRay: 445 I would have expected at least a tie and taking into consideration the not yet released back-catalogue even a slight plus for Blu-Ray. But it's not nearly the half for Blu-Ray  | | | It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

Many independent films, low budget films, music concerts, documentaries are simply not released on Blu, cuz there is not much difference quality wise with a low budget product and the Blu buyers want excellent shiny picture quality, so it makes no sense for small companies to release such low budget stuff on Blu. | | Posted: | | | | I don't see another physical medium taking out Blu-Ray but it will outlast DVD - but I expect DVD's to be around for another ten years. DVD won't die until the big production companies stop supporting the format - the same way they stopped supporting HD-DVD.
Blu-Ray physical media will eventually die once online streaming can match the quality and online streaming has reached the vast majority of the population. Once the cost benefit of physical media is no longer relevant, it's gone. |

I think the problem here is the constant attempt to somehow seperate DVD from Blu as if they're competing when most purchasers just see it as a refinement of what they've already been buying. For some titles it's worth the extra effort, for many others it's not. Given that, there are two obvious conclusions to be drawn, Blu will never be what SD was in it's heyday, and both formats are likely to die together...whenever that is. |

That, in my opinion, is a pipe-dream. I believe that streaming will eventually obsolete any physical format. eBook sales have finally eclipsed print sales on Amazon. Boils down to cost recovery for the producers. I don't think another physical media will replace Blu-Ray. With each new format, there was a noticeable improvement in audio and visual quality. You may recall seeing displays at stores that show the DVD quality on the left side and the Blu-Ray quality on the right in order to drive home the improvements given by the Blu-Ray format. A new format with higher quality than Blu-Ray really won't be evident to the masses comparing side-by-side and therefor not likely to be adopted by the masses. |

I still buy discs of course. But it's an excellent way to catch up on movies that I was curious about, but not enough to buy. And it's a fantastic way to catch TV series. Sometimes I'll even watch Netflix rather than go get the disc. I use Netflix streaming for TV shows nearly exclusively since the audio is typically geared towards stereo to begin with.

| | Posted: | | | | I've owned a Blu-ray player for 4 years now but I still haven't stopped buying DVDs. Both formats have their uses depending on the content. I don't think either format will die anytime soon. They might be diminishing though, like most physical media. It's clear that CD sales have suffered the most from streaming and downloading. Then DVD will follow and finally Blu-ray. But there will always be a small group of enthusiasts who prefer to buy a high quality physical media so whatever replaces Blu will probably be a niche format, probably expensive like old LDs. But PQ will be awesome, like 4K lossless video direct from the studio master. Hopefully not manipulated with DNR like today's releases. | | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

Well said, as I agree 100%. I was the same as you, but once I got it on my 360, then later my Tivo, I find I purchase less DVDs (in particular TV shows).
