| | Posted: | | | | I've noticed that WB release alot of movies on BD's and I wonder if they're really are proper BD's or just upscaled DVD's. Movies like Cobra are released instant on BD while titles from 2010 aren't released on BD because they have to remaster it properly for high-def. Is this common for all moviecompanies, just release it on BD as it is, and give the sh** about the quality? is there any list around to give a heads up to what "not to buy because it's just upscaled dvd"? I think it's sad that moviecompanies just release it on BD without any qualityprotection of the movies. "we wanna make money, just upscale the dvd and sell it as a "proper" BD. | | Posted: | | | | I have never heard of Warner releasing upscales and I doubt you will find any. Their releases are generally good to excellent but for non-major titles they sometimes use old outdated transfers. It's still HD though, just not restored like some major titles (Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz etc.)
If you want to avoid bad transfers, check out review sites like Blu-ray.com or DVDBeaver. They often have screen shots that will give you a good idea about what quality to expect. | | | | First registered: February 15, 2002 |

| | Posted: | | | | I've been pleasantly surprised with a few older WB BD's I've got recently.
Training Day and ATL both feel cheap having only the same old DD 5.1 audio and extras that the dvds do. I half expected the picture to just be bad or upcomnverted, but both are pretty stunning video-wise. |

The quality seems > good to > better / best ..,
The major title releases that go thru a MAJOR 4K restoration with every frame digitally enhanced and upgraded for color correction etc . ( these $3M restorations) .. those are the prints I'll be sure to buy..
but others I'll just keep (i.e.) Cobra for instance on STD dvd and use my upscaling DVD to display on my 16:9 in 720 P .... Is good enough for these low budget releases .. BUT Don't waste your money and time for a BD release that is usually up to & over $8.00 the srp of a standard DVD .. for low budget upscaled prints ... | | Posted: | | | | As impressed as I am with Training Day, I'm equally disappointed with True Romance, which looks exactly like the dvd when I compared select scenes from both. I think a few scenes do look better on Blu, just none of the big favorite ones. I saw Scarface was on an HD channel the other day. Was so hyped to see it HD, but they were playing a super-dark, edited for TV print in 4:3.  I do always laugh at the TV edits, esp. for Scarface, so I watched the last scenes and cracked up. |

Around here only Showtime will go OAR, every other premium channel crops to 1.78, or just plays SD on the HD channel 80% of the time, like MTV and VH1 never bother to broadcast in HD, not even for Jersey Shore which is they're biggest show. If a film I want to see is on HBO or Cinemax, I have to check the specs online to see the ratio as I refuse to watch cropped films if at all possible! So when they play White Chicks or Friday, it's fine as it's 1.85, just a bit more open or cropped so little I can't tell. Anything 2.35 I either wait for Showtime or rent. |
