For some time I've been considering picking up a luchador movie to see what they're like. I've seen bits of one in a Mexican fast food place I visit (they look like brilliant fun!), but it seems that to buy one I'll have to import. I'm trying to reign in my spending a bit, so chances are I'll only get the one, but if I enjoy it I'll look at getting more later on.

So, I was wondering if there were any people with insights to give. Where should I be shopping online? Which labels release their titles with English subtitles? What's a good place to start (I'm thinking perhaps Santo & Blue Demon vs. Dracula since it has two famous luchadors or a copy of Santo Contra la Invasion de los Marcianos).

Any advice?

Although I haven't seen any luchador movies, I did see a Hollywood parody: Nacho Libre and there were a few fun gags in it. Might be worth a spin:

From Blu-ray.com:
Quote:
Jack Black is at his comic best as Ignacio, a disrespected cook at a Mexican monastery that can barely afford to feed the orphans who live there. Inspired by a local wrestling hero, he decides to moonlight as the not-so-famous Luchador "Nacho Libre" to earn money for the monastery -- not to mention the admiration of beautiful nun Sister Encarnacion.

A good place to start for the USA is always Michael's Movie Mayhem (http://dvdlist.kazart.com/DVDList.php) where filling in SANTO f.i. gives you 52 results and often the  Amazon.com address with price. Hope this helps.

Look at my collection. Any Santo movie is fun. Try one, any one. If you have fun, try a second. There are lots of Santo movies and Blue Demon movies available in US region 1 versions. Expect cheesy movies (horror or detective style) randomly interrupted with staged wrestling scenes (rarely with an audience). Have fun!
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

It looks like Vibrocount and I will want to be careful, based on this article. That's right, a US company releasing something that's not English-friendly!

Such a shame, as these were looking like being great value ($10 for two movies).

Just stumbled across El Santo!, which has a run down (synopsis and brief review) of what seems to be all of the DVD releases from Rise Above. I've also found an eBay seller who has the Rise Above DVDs for a reasonable price.

Anything with Jack Black as the lead, i avoid like the plague. You can scream Be Kind Rewind till your blue in the face, but i will never watch it.

That's my general rule (School of Rock being a rare exception). The guy was in The Neverending Story 3 ffs! That's enough to sign a death warrant right there.

Last night after my last post I found one more title I was missing off the above list. I've also noticed that the boxset Santo and the Monsters seems to be reasonable value, so I'll probably kick off with that one.

The only time Jack Black brought me any joy and entertainment. Was this....

This looks freaken awesome! A shame there doesn't seem to be a legit subtitled release (someone prove me wrong).

Full Frame 1.33

All Regions

Released: 12/07/2005

Full Frame 1.33

^ Has the "Big 3": Santo, Blue Demon and Mil Mascaras

There are two UK Santo releases, but the covers are just horrible. I may consider them when I exhaust my other options.
