My "DVD Register" Windows Phone 7 app is now available on the marketplace allowing you to browse your DVD Profiler collection directly on the phone.

Notice I have no intention of competing against Invelos. If (when?) Ken release an official Windows Phone app, I'll pull my version from the marketplace (unless Ken's version isn't somewhat decent obviously, gotta keep a bit of pressure on him)

I have had some reports of synchronization problems with large collections but nothing I have been able to reproduce with my own 850+ collection. If you run into any issues, please post details on them here, or send them to the support email listed in the about box of the app.

If you just want to see screenshots of the app. click here. And yes, I know it's Blu-ray, not Blue-ray - but I guess I can't change it without uploading a new version.

You will also need to have my "Restifier" plugin installed in DVD Profiler:

To synchronize the collection to your phone, you need to:
1) Have DVD Profiler running (with the Restifier plugin enabled)
2) Ensure the phone can reach the computer running DVD Profiler.

Point 1 could be replaced with a webserver + export from DVD Profiler (I hacked up something for this based on IIS already, but more work would be needed before it would really be stable)

Point 2 is easiest to achive if the phone is connected to the computer directly with the USB cable (and Zune running), or if the phone is connected on the same wireless as the computer running DVD Profiler (so yes, this would imply you can only do the synchronization at home).

It is possibly to open your router to allow traffic comming from the internet to reach your computer running DVD Profiler, and this would allow synchronizing from everywhere you have an internet connection (including the phones data connection).

Obviously opening a port in the router will increase the risk of an attack on your computer/network succeeding. If you do not already know how to open a port and judge if you consider it safe I recommend you do NOT go this route. I can make no promises about how safe the Restifier plugin is. I am fairly confident of the plugin itself, but it do call the API of DVD Profiler, and I have no idea how safe that is against an attack using for example buffer overruns.

I have no need for the WP7 app itself but the Restifier plugin sounds very interesting to me and I'm going to check it out when I get a chance.

Is there any restrictions on using it for other than the WP7 devices?

No. Currently it's read only, but it could be enabled for writing as well. That would bring in the considerations for authentication and authorization though, which complicates it quite a lot.

Opening it up for returning additional data with the ID list (title springs to mind) is probably not too hard if needed (just boring, hence I haven't done it).

Well, I synchronized 3200 or so out of about 3400 in my collection and now I'm getting "Operation not permitted on IsolatedStorageFileStre" during sync.  Is this the error you were referring to on large collections?

The last few lines in the Restifier log are:

Any ideas?

Nope, this is not the problem I was referring to - you managed to find something new. Unfortunately I have no idea why this would happen.

I assume you still have available memory left on the phone? What happens if you start sync again? Does it start synching over from the start (listing all movies as new), or does it pick up from the 3200 +/- mark - and if so does it fail right away?

I have space on the phone.  When I restart the sync, it picks up from the place it left off and therefore fails almost immediately.

Just for kicks, I tried removing the problematic DVD (which I derived from the logfile), and it looks like it's proceeding, so there may have been something in particular about that cover art that was causing a problem.  I'll keep you posted, but right now it looks like I'm unblocked.

I spoke too soon, it's punking out on a different cover now.  Got a few more done, though.

Is there a per app storage limit on Windows Phone 7?  I wonder if I'm hitting that.

I am not aware of any max storage limit for the apps. The most likely problem is the covers giving some problems in the code I use to calculate their size. Can you please send one of the broken covers to larsm@xs4all.nl - then I'll check if it's breaking on them - and if it is (and I can fix it) I'll update the app.

On profiles that are box sets, I can see a down-arrow icon on the right-hand-side of the entry. Is this meant to do anything? Does it simply indicate that the entry is a box set?

On a good day tabbing it expands the list with the boxset. You have to hit them a bit more precise than I would have liked (maybe I'll look into this for future versions), and performance of the list will drop when it encounters large boxsets.

You can see a screenshots of an expanded boxset here (6th screenshot).

I am also considering completely changing the boxset feature, for example remove the expand arrow and add another page in the panorama page where you can see (and open) the child profiles. If you have any suggestions I am open for them, but obviously it takes time to implement something, so I might not do it even though I agree it's a good idea.

Fantastic. I was able to get the box set to expand/open. It took a few tries as most of the time when I pressed on the arrow it did nothing. It is quite difficult to touch the screen in just the right spot.

How can it be made better? Well, using another page in the panoram view would be fine for box sets that are episodes of a TV series. I'm just not sure how it would look for a box set that was a collection of movies. For example, "The James Bond Special Edition DVD Collection" which contains all of the James Bond movies, where I think you would want each of the movie titles in the main list. When I am shopping I might see the DVD for Moonraker on sale. I would like to look in DVD Register to see if I already have the movie. Currently, I can't do that unless I know it is in the James Bond Collection and go looking in that box set.

Oh, and once again, thank you for providing this app. Even as it is I can use it. Especially since it is a free app.
