| | Posted: | | | | It was "My Bloody Valentine" which was probably not the greatest movie to pick as my first BR, but that is what was in the 2 for 10 bucks bin. The problems :
- The image was too good. It looked like those plays my parents used to watch on public television when I was growing up. You could always tell it was a play, it never had that movie look.
- The image was so good, it took away from the CGI. Maybe the movie just featured bad CGI, but there was no blurring of the image between what was real and what was computer-generated. As a result, any CGI looked incredibly fake and out of place.
All of my other media is on DVDs, which I watch with an upconverting DVD player at 1080p. I realize that I am trusting an algorithm to build the image to 1080 lines, but it seems to do a terrific job. Movies still look like movies, not like live television. CGI generally looks fine, difficult to tell that it is not real. It seems to me to be a better viewing experience.
I am sure that some films (such as Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs) or any other animated film probably benefits enormously from BluRay, but I am left with a feeling that live action films are better off on DVD.

It does however as you point out highlight bad special effects and poor transfers in a way that DVD didn't, but that's because DVD is one big blur in comparison to high definition. | | Posted: | | | | What is also a probleme is the eyes are not used to to see such a good sharpness, ... They used to see a DVD pic, so something better looks new. Give HD a chance. Look for good transfers and let your eyes acclimatize to the new medium, you'll see it's worth. And if this doesn't apply to you: You can get cheap DVDs the next few years. |

By chance, what are you TV settings set at? I know at Best Buy they adjust the TV settings to make the picture look amazing, but not film like at all. I'm wondering if this could be the same thing here. Go to the library or rent the first Pirates of the Caribbean film, that BD was awe-inspiring and I felt like I could climb into my screen and be in the movie.
Other awesome BD's (a/v quality-wise) to try out:
Boogie Nights
Casino
Gangs of New York (be sure it's the re-issue. It should have a "remastered" sticker on front, but lower back will say 2010 Blu-Ray release, old ones I don't think have a date printed at all, or it would be 08 or 09. First batch was shiesse)
Inglorious Basterds
Iron Man
Incredible Hulk
National Treasure (either)
The New York Ripper (compared to old dvd versions, this is beyond words)
Public Enemies
The Ruins
Sin City
Sunshine
Trick 'r Treat
The Wrestler
Watch any of these right after the dvd and if you stil feel dvd is better for movies, then have at it and enjoy. I kinda hated my first 3 BD's as I picked films that all had sub-par BD's. Glad I stuck it out and saw the light of good BD. It's great, although unforgiving for older, weeker effects as they stand out more. |

| | Posted: | | | | From other stuff I've read online, if you have one of those tv's with multiple settings for picture refresh, turn it back to 60Hz. 120Hz and up makes for a plastic looking picture, 60 is more natural with a bit of motion blur. That's what I've read, but my TV is 60Hz only so I can't compare it except to the store ones, which are always set to plastic IMO. |

I've seen a similar issue but it appeares it is not the BD or the Player. It seems to be an effect of the settings on the TV when in HD mode. I have two Sony's. The TV in the bedroom looks exactly like you describe but the same DB on the same player (and different) on the TV in the Living room TV looks completely different. Both are 1080ps. I can get the model numbers when I get home. I've been meaning to play with the settings on the one to see if I can figure out what the difference is. Tom |

That said, I have heard that you shouldn't watch porn in HD. |

You should check your TV settings. Most TVs nowadays have some fancy settings, which doubles (or even quadrouples) the frame rate, making everything look like part reality TV, part video game. On my Panasonic it's either called 24p smooth, or IFC. Just make sure settings like that are turned off. Blu-rays looks much more film-like than DVD IMO. | | |  |
