Since the other "Forum Moderation" thread was locked before I had a chance to respond, I felt it was only fair to open this thread in the "General" forums, to continue the conversation which Gerri started quite a while ago..

In the other thread, the last post said:

Which has been done numerous times, including today.  All it takes is for a certain someone to PM Ken or Gerri!

I'm not sure what this post is referring to, but the forum moderation is not done in response to PMs, it's done by we forum moderators monitoring the flagged posts and browsing manually.

And with that, I think this post is ready for lock.

Since my "moderated" post was not "flagged" by anyone (no red zingers), I can only assume that it was brought to your attention by a PM.

Or are you telling us that you read every single post in the forums to see if they require moderation even though they have not been flagged.  That seems like a very time-consuming and unnecessary process!

Admin's can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think red arrows show up on user's reputation feedback screen any more. I think it's strictly a "notify moderator" button now. I know the column is still there on the reputation screen, but I don't think it's been in use since the change.

Correct. When the Red Arrows stopped effecting reputation they stopped showing up on that screen. While you can see which posts you have given a red arrow, you can't see which of your posts have received any.

Ahhh..I didn't know that.  Makes it kinda difficult to know when you've crossed the line in the eyes of the community, doesn't it?

Thanks.

Yeah, I had no idea about that change either. Surely it would make more sense to allow users to see red arrows, that gives them the chance to self-moderate before formal action is taken.

But that would make sense, and this forum has proven in the past, that common sense is rarely appreciated.

I frequent at least five other forums and have never seen a forum so dysfunctional when it comes to the disciplinary and operational functions of said forum.

The problem doesn't rest with one member of the forum. The problem rests with the powers that be who either don't have the stomach to deal with problems or are indifferent to the forum community.

I agree that I think you should still be able to see the red zingers. It allows one to know when they've, as hal put it, crossed the line in the eyes of the community.

Like the role capitalization thread going on right now. I know I've gotten a little too involved in it, and I HOPE I haven't said anything to offend anyone, I try my best to just stick to what I feel about the topic instead of what I feel about a person or what's been said of me, but I might sometimes slip, and a red zinger might let me know I've crossed that line and to revise what I've said in a way as to not offend anyone.

On the other hand, red arrows being seen might just let someone know ahead of time that they're being a jackass, and they might revise it so it appears that they're not being a jackass, when that was their intention all along.

So all in all, I'm of absolutely no help here.
The night is calling. And it whispers to me soflty come and play.

As far as I'm concerned, you haven't come anywhere near the line.

I hope I haven't either, although I have debated fervently.

Good to know, thanks for that hal.

I don't feel you have either to be honest. We may not agree even the slightest and it's nice to know that a debate can rage on without that line being crossed!

I think I would like the indication of thumbs up/down that I see on other boards.  too many thumbs down, hides the post unless you opt to see it.

Then have the separate button for report to moderator.  That way people could rate whether a post was "helpful" or "positive", or the opposite, and still have the capability of reporting serious stuff to the moderator.

Just a thought

I think that there's so much bad blood between some users, they would deliberately use that to try and hide posts from certain users regardless of content. Of course, action could be taken against those who misuse it.

While the above can work on some forums, sadly I don't think it's the best option here.

It wouldn't hide the whole post.  What would happen is there would be a placeholder for the post with the username and something like "This post has been hidden to to low rating"  Click here to view.

That way, if you chose to view it you could, or you could choose to skip it.  It would become an active user choice....

There would still need to be moderators, to moderate certain posts...
