My TV and DVD player died this week and forced me to by new equipment.  I purchased a fanstastic set from Ultimate Electronics.  55 in Samsung 7000 Series LED 3D Television, Sansung 3D Blu-ray Player and 3D str-arter kit.  I cannot believe the difference in the picture

Don't be blue, you have gone Blu!

Congratulations!

Be careful with those double-dip upgrades though...

It is interesting that you mention Dawn.  It is one of my all time favorite zombies movies and Wal-Mart had it on their website for under 10 dollars.  Would you mind telling me what aspects you feel are so improved?

It don't have all the supplements from the ultimate edition DVD but has a good amount of stuff on it if extras sway you. In terms of technical presentation from the video perspective as i don't have an audio set up to comment on the audio.

Dawn of the Dead is very clean and clear in a natural not DNR look. It's amazing how much colour there is considering i never thought there was much of pallet to it and fine detail is all picked out nicely as well.

You can't go wrong for under 10 bucks with this one.

For comparisons of various editions*, I can recommend DVD Beaver. It's a very ugly site, but they've got a pretty sizeable comparisons section:

http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film/compare.htm

Each comparison includes both screenshots as well as the reviewer's written opinion.

Unfortunately they don't have the Dawn of the Dead Blu-ray up for comparison, but this is what DVD Talk has to say:

Quote:
I didn't really think all that much of this Blu-ray release until I dropped in the first DVD from Anchor Bay's four-disc Ultimate Edition from a few years back. The difference between this 1080p presentation and the upscaled Divimax release is dramatic. The flourescent hues of the stage blood leap off the screen, and the image is drastically crisper and far better defined than any previous release. The edge enhancement that crept into the DVD is largely wiped away, and the very healthy bitrate of the AVC encoding helps stave off any sign of compression artifacting.

I'd bet most kneejerk reactions to this Blu-ray release of Dawn of the Dead are going to range anywhere from indifferent to hesitantly positive. Taken purely on its own, the movie just looks alright in high definition, not managing to impress or disappoint to any great extent. Still, a direct comparison reveals a very substantial improvement over the most recent DVD release. I believe there's room for even further improvement if Anchor Bay were to retransfer the film for another special edition down the road, but as long as Dawn of the Dead's rabid legion of fans go in with reasonable expectations, I think most of them will walk away pleased.
    Full review here: http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/30623/dawn-of-the-dead-1978/

* They not only do DVD-to-Blu comparisons, but also Blu-to-Blu and DVD-to-DVD of different regions, and (I think) Blu-to-HD DVD.
