any type of scanner that scans and captures the DVD image to a .jpg  or bitmap can be used.

OPN 2001 is a barcode scanner.

Whether it is suitable or not for DVDProfiler purposes depends on the software.
You need a software that is capable of transforming the scanned barcode into a txt file (Windows Notepad).
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

goblinsdoitall is right. As I see it, the driver software comes with a download utility that reads the barcodes from the device. With it you can save the barcodes as a text file. The format seems to be always "Barcode Data, Barcode Type, Time, Date <CR><LF>". AFAIK DVD Profiler needs one barcode per line w/o any other data, so you'll probably have to clean it up first (e.g. with a spreadsheet application).

Here are some PDF documents that might help you.
Or just contact the manufacturer and ask, if the output format is configurable.

EDIT:
You are aware of the much cheaper alternatives, like e.g. CueCat, right? Tethered barcode scanners usually work like a keyboard – the barcode is inserted wherever your cursor is at the moment.
However, if you plan on doing inventory from time to time and you don't have a computer/notebook/netbook near your collection, then a wireless model might be the better choice.

I should have googled that product before I answered it .. too bad he didn't put the 'term' barcode into the heading...

Sorry. I know the o/p is from last year. This scanner now has new firmware and it can be used in either USB-VCP (Virtual Com Port) (Default) mode or as a true USB-HID (Human Interface Device) emulating the numeric keypad of your keyboard. The later mode is brilliant and operates exactly as a barcode scanner should do with DVD Profiler - it now does the Alt+F10 UPC/EAN search of your collection, and does the entering of new DVDs via the Add DVD function using the search UPC/EAN of the Invelos online profile database (Previously you could only do it using the default mode and saving your barcodes to a batch file and importing that file into your add DVD function). I use my Opticon OPN-2001 to audit my collection and to check in/out DVDs on loan to family and friends. In USB-VCP mode, I take the unit (about the size of my thumb) shopping to scan and create batches of DVD barcodes to add into my Wishlist when I get home.  There is also an Opticon OPN-2002 barcode scanner which is a bluetooth wireless device that can also be used with bluetooth equipped Apple iPads, laptops etc.
For me, it has been a very worthwhile investment.

Part 2. New firmware can be found at Opticon USA's ftp site: http://ftp.opticonusa.com/OPN2001/Software/OS/ and firmware installation instructions here: https://wiki.opticonusa.com/techsupport/en/OPN2001
Once you have the RBB36403.hex firmware version installed you will also have to scan the USB HID default barcodes (see below). This will turn the device into a USB HID device. If you wish to go back to the batch serial mode using the OPN application all you have to do is scan the USB VCP default barcodes. One of the neat things about this application is that, if you disconnect the OPN2001, go scan some barcodes, come back to your computer, connect the OPN2001, put your cursor where you want the data, and press the scan button it will dump all of the barcodes scanned wherever your cursor is.
You wiill also need two (2) configuration barcodes for USB-VCP and USB-HID which are in the following PDF document: www.opticonusa.com/pdf/Manuals/Universal_Menu_Book.pdf - or obtain opticonfigue configuration barcodes from this link:  http://opticonfigure.opticon.com/  - You will need to print out a page of each (UBS-VCP and USB-HID) and scan the settings into your device (SET, USB-VCP, END) or (SET, USB-HID, END). Send me a PM if more help needed.
