A couple days ago I was at a Walmart store in Lapeer, MI and they had out several older season sets all for $13.00 each. I picked up Who's the Boss since I liked the series. But when I went to a checkout to pay for it, the cash register offered me a 1 year service plan for that DVD.

If the DVD were bad, it's usually well within the return period for exchange. And if the DVD isn't defective, then under ideal condition DVD should last years and even a decade or 2.  I've had only 1 bad DVD out of 600 in my collection and it was one of the early Disney dual layered DVD, they replaced it for free.

Think Walmart is trying to milk some extra money somewhere else to offset their perpetual dropping prices?  1 year service plan on a $13 DVD set is just plain asinine.

PS BTW that DVD set was my entry #600 in my collection

The same thing happened to me $1 for a $13 DVD and $3 for for a new release Legion. I declined both of the fees

too bad DVD rot takes longer than a year... and even if it were covered, by the time it sets in, the DVD is out of print!
If it wasn't for bad taste, I wouldn't have no taste at all.

If someone's feeling impish, he could buy a bargain bin disc, opt in on the "service plan," scratch it up on the sidewalk outside and bring it back in for refinishing.

I got a DVD set at  store in the mall here..FYE, and they asked me the same thing.  Though it was only for the set and not the two cheap single titles I also got.

I wouldn't doubt that at all... being as often as they charge me twice for items that I only purchased one of, or their "rollback prices" half the time not even ringing up correctly at the register.

I know a lot of people who never even check their receipts and simply assume they were charged correctly. I wonder how much $$$ Wal-Mart makes every day from these...

it is so easy to ring up more of something when you are only buying one of that item. all the worker has to do is scan it an extra time and if you don't look at your reciept your screwed. lots of the employees do not care.

Yes, and I caught a worker deliberately scanning an item twice recently (or was just otherwise stupid)...and it was actually a Wal-Mart manager.

He scanned a $1 birthday card and laid it over on top of the bag revolver. He scanned another two items from the trolley, and then grabbed the card and scanned it again! Not a second thought or a look at the receipt's already scanned-in items or anything.

Yeah, I got the same warranty "offer" when I bought a few BDs and DVDs, a couple of the DVDs were only $5. Yeah, I'll pay $1 to get protection on them...

I got a Blu-ray at Walmart this evening and was asked about that.  I just got some other DVDs there within the last week and wasn't asked, so it has just started here.

A local Walmart had put in a bunch of new titles in the $5 bin so my Mom and I got quite a few.  Between us, a total of 12 $5 DVD were picked up.  Of that 12, 9 of them (plus a $7.50 DVD) came with 1 year service plan.    That's a total of $10 that Walmart tried to screw us.

I guess if it is OK for them to try and steal some money on useless scheme, then it is OK if I tried to steal a DVD that would never get watched at all.

Has anyone actually looked to see what the 1 year plan covers?  If it covers accidental damage, then it may actually be useful if you have a 5 year old kid who likes to play Frisbee with the DVD.  But if accidental damage is not covered, then it's about as practical as an used air conditioner store in Antarctic.

They tried to get me to get the disc replacement plan as well on some BDs that I bought from them, but I turned them down. If I remember right, Circuit City used to do this as well.
