I just ran across a title that has

"Sound Operator" in the usual spot where I see "Sound Mixer" for the Production Sound Mixer credit.

Can not use it, Correct?

Sound Operator sounds like a Boom Operator, but according to Wikipedia it's an equivalent for sound mixer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sound_operator.

Actually the next credit below it is "Boom Operator".

This movie does not have  a Production Sound Mixer listed, or any of Profilers "Equivalents"  But this credit sits where I would expect to see "Sound Mixer"

I'd go with "Production Sound Mixer" indeed. As for the inevitable different viewpoints, I'd like to refer to my post in the previous similar thread (here).

If I saw that credit personally, I'd probably select "Sound", but I'd be more than happy to accept Corne's job description and put it under "Production Sound Mixer" instead.

Is it a direct translation of a Profiler role?  The answer to that question will tell you whether or not it can be included.

Okay, Martian I have to ask, what does direct translation mean to you. I can see arguments on both sides of this, some saying yes it is a direct translation and some saying no it's not. So, we have a term in the Rules but no way to apply it, nothing that spells out what a direct translation is or is not.

Which is why I did not provide an answer.  I, too, can see arguments on both sides so I leave it up to the contributor to decide.

Well.  It is my local.  I did not contribute that credit.

Would have opened up a lot of yes and no comments in voting, and I decided not to deal with that end of it.

I know for a fact that this is the Production sound mixer of this movie, and threw this out here as another example of the limitations of what the arguments of crew table provides, instead of allowing us to put in the actual job (no matter what it is called)

That, to me, is all that matters. I want to track the film's production sound mixer, no matter what label he's credited with.

I would support crew roles by function instead of labels as well. The same way as we have to do it for all non-English credits on a daily basis. And we do this with much less problems as the exactly as listed with no variation allowed way for US-English credits.

If this change was submitted with notes, I would have no problem voting yes.

Another I came across...

Sound Recordist - in this film is the Production Sound Mixer.  Crew table forces it into (directly by name) into the generic sound

If there is any way of documenting the actual job done, I would do so and put the credit in the correct category. Call it a "direct translation".

Sound recordist can be a UK direct translation of the US production sound mixer. Therefore production sound mixer is allowed in this case.
