| Posted: | | | | For DVD Profiler's purposes,
Is a Visual Effects Supervisor the Same as a Special Effects Supervisor.
I know in the industry, these are 2 distinct classifications, but there is a section of the rules that states
"A Special Effects Coordinator can be added & credited when No Special Effects Supervisor is credited anywhere in the credits"
Does a Visual Effects Supervisor meet this criteria?

| Posted: | | | | You can always add a "Visual Effects Supervisor" anyways Charlie, it's in the crew chart: Quote: Visual Effects Individual Credits: Visual/Digital/Special/Special Visual Effects, including Designer, Supervisor, and Director, Special Photographic Effects | | | Corey |

After reading his post several times, I think he is asking if he can add the Special Effects Coordinator when there is a Visual Effects Supervisor but no Special Effects Supervisor. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever. I re-read it again. Well, I'd definitely say yes that a Special Effects Coordinator can be added if there is already a Visual Effects Supervisor. Visual Effects and Special Effects can often be two different things in a film, and in many films there are credits for both. Visual Effects could be CGI, while Special Effects could very well mean on-set practical effects. Besides, the rules explicitly state "when No Special Effects Supervisor is credited anywhere in the credits" and there's no mention of that alternately meaning a "Visual Effects Supervisor" which is a very common credit in films. | | | Corey | | | Last edited: by Katatonia |

No. Visual Effects usually is done in post production. Today mostly with CGI. Special Effects usually means done on-set. For example bringing a full size robot to life on-set. Even though Profiler lists these as under Visual Effects, each credit is separate and identifies a different speciality.

No. Two separate things. As Kat pointed out. |

After reading his post several times, I think he is asking if he can add the Special Effects Coordinator when there is a Visual Effects Supervisor but no Special Effects Supervisor. That's how I read it also. (After 4 times of reading) And I would say yes, it's allowed to include in this case. |

| Posted: | | | | CharlieM's got a contribution up right now for a Bedtime Stories profile. He's added a Special Effects Coordinator and I've voted no based on that line in the credits. "A Special Effects Coordinator can be added & credited when No Special Effects Supervisor is credited anywhere in the credits". Maybe I'm misunderstanding that addition to the rules. I read it as meaning that a Special Effects Coordinator can be added when there's absolutely no other credits that would fall under what we categorize as the Visual Effects section of the crew. I never read it as JUST for a Special Effects Supervisor. If I've misunderstood this rule (as everyone in this thread seems to think that what I think is not the case ), I'll absolutely withdraw my no vote and give the proper and according yes vote! | | | The night is calling. | Posted: | | | | I think this is a case of people reading more into the rules than is actually there.
This particular rule has always seemed very clear to me because is specifically states 'Special Effects Supervisor'...I'm sure if Ken had wanted Visual Effects Supervisor to also be a knockout for Coordinator he would have listed it.
Best to keep things simple when they are, in fact, well....simple. |

| Posted: | | | | I seer it as simple, as well, Merrik. BUT that said I can understand where you were coming from. This is one of the issues that can be created by shoehorning data as we do, while we call it VE, still; SE, VE, DE and so on are very different things. I fear we will have these issues as long as we continue shoehorning and don't move to some form of Op[en Credits. But you did the right thing in changing your vote to Yes. | | | ASSUME NOTHING!!!!!! | Posted: | | | | I didn't mean to call anybody out, and that is why I wordied it the way I did.
I entered the credit the way I saw the rule, and wanted to make sure I didn't misread it.
If I had, I would have changed it and resubmitted.

Even if you had mentioned me, I wouldn't have felt called out. It was the first time that's even come up for me when voting, and as I was voting as I was like "...hmmm... am I voting correctly?"
