Because I keep collecting the Disney classics on DVD, it's usually 2 now when I get both the numbered Swedish DVD edition as well as the US or UK Blu-ray (because they are cheaper).

I pick the swag I like the most, and buy that one.  I never double dip, on release day, based on exclusive swag.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

On release date: Just one Edition.

But it can happen I buy a second Edition later.

A buy of a  third Edition of the same movie never happened, but let's see what the future brings.

I bought 2 Trerminator Salvation BD's on release day. The BB skull, but then Wal-Mart had the stickers mixed up, so I got the standard BD for dvd price and returned the skull package.

I'm almost certain this is the only time I've bought more than 1 version of release day. As for upgrading down the road, I do that all the time.

1.

I did buy 2 releases of The Dark Knight on release, though one was a present for my brother, so I don't really count that.

I'm bad for multiple-dipping in general; at one time I had six different versions of Romero's Night of the Living Dead. I'm now down to a much more healthy and sane three copies.

I'm pretty sure that I did two editions of something, where both Best Buy and Target had exclusive bonus discs.  But I can't remember the title of what that was.  Probably shouldn't have bought either then, I guess.

Like most of the people in this thread, I've only ever bought one on release date. I did, however, for a while own every version of Blade Runner available on DVD, but my girlfriend kept making fun of me so now I only have the attache case version (which has like five versions of the movie in it, anyway).
