I'll be going away for a little under a week to help out with my ailing father.  I figured I would bring my laptop along with me so I can watch some movies in my downtime & on the flights.  I figured this would be a good reason to actually use the Digital Copy of several of the titles I own, so I wouldn't have to bring along the physical disc.  But, when I try to load the Digital Copy on to laptop, it says I have to update the security component of Win Media Player.  I click on the link provided, but the "Update" button on the MS site is grayed out and not clickable.  I'm running Win7 with Media Player 12.  I've done a simple search online and retried it after a "clean boot" but no luck.  Anyone else have this problem or know how to get around it?

Stupid question, but I take it you're running IE? It won't work in another browser.

Weblink

Oh yeah, make sure you're running as administrator (right click on the app and start it from the menu).

If that fails, have you tried running Windows Update and looking under optional updates?

I learned long ago that MS updates only work under IE and not Firefox, so that is not the issue.  I did also look for optional updates, but none showed as available for Media Player.

OK, this is weird, but I got it working.  I was entering the first link in the article mentioned below, and naturally the previous address tried to auto-complete.  For giggles, I went to try it one more time while the disc was not in the laptop (and therefore the program to load the Digital Copy was not running).  This time the button was active and the component has been installed successfully.  The Digital Copy of Up is now being loaded.    Star Trek is next!

Everything seems to be working fine now.    Digital Copies within the valid code timeframe I've loaded are: Up, Star Trek and Terminator Salvation.  I've also been able to load outdated codes for: The Dark Knight, Rambo and Alien vs Predator: Requiem.  The code for Live Free or Die Hard is also outdated but doesn't seem to want to work anymore (although, it doesn't help that the code is printed crooked on the paper and hard to read...I'm not getting an invalid code error, but rather a DRM shutdown error).  Wall-E is the only other disc I own with Digital Copy I have left to load.

Just wanted to follow up on this...I finally got Live Free or Die Hard loaded, even though the code "expired" over a year ago.    I Googled the error message I was getting and found it to be a common problem with this title.  The work-around was to simply go directly to the .wmv file on the disc and open it...it prompted for the code in a simple text box saying Fox knew of some problems with invalid codes, and once I entered the code I instantly got the license.  I then copy & pasted the file to my laptop and everything works fine.

And for those curious (since it was brought up in another thread), the point of my trip was completely turned around but turned out for the best.  The idea was for me to take care of my father who's been battling cancer for 16+ years while my mother was going to spend time with my grandmother who's 92 and just had hip-replacement surgery.  Turned out the while I was on the plane down, all the meds my father was on, coupled with a blood thinner he was on for a blood clot in his leg, took a toll on him and he wound up in the ER.  While there he suffered a mild heart attack.  Over the course of several days, a team of 11 doctors managed to straighten him out and he's now taken up residence at a rehab hospital, learning to walk again.  Naturally, he's depressed and doesn't want to be there, but he's a fighter and will do what it takes to get home and continue his life.  I'm glad I was able to be there for at least a few days to help where I could and to help see him thru this latest obstacle.
