I'm auditing Meet Joe Black and there are 4 OMB credits in the existing profile. They are for, and I quote exactly how credited near very end of end credits (only thanks, legal text and logos follow):

Suggested by the Play "Death Takes a Holiday"
Written by Alberto Casella and Adapted by Walter Ferris
and the Motion Picture Screenplay by
Maxwell Anderson and Gladys Lehman

Like I said, currently all 4 are in with OMB, but something about suggested by doesn't equal OMB in my eyes, so I want to see what others think.

IMHO a "Suggested By" is just a variant of "Based upon".
So it would be OMB.
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

I honestly don't care if it is entered or not but, if it is entered, OMB is the only one it could be.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Yeah, I think that's probably OMB for all four.

Adapted by or Adaptation by isn't in the role list. I enter such a credit as 'Other'. Some argue that it's OMB, but it's a credit between OMB and screenwriter. There are some topics about this.

Written by = Writer
Screenplay = Screenwriter (or am I not understanding the sentence?)
Adapted by = Imho no credit in DVDP (See this thread)
Suggested by = (if included OMB (but I would leave it out)

I'm afraid so. These aren't "individual" credits - they're all part of one large "Suggested by" credit, and as such, they're all OMB.

Ah, now it gets clearer.
Then all OMB,...
...but imho the "adapted by" should not be included. (But as we've seen in the other thread: There are different opinions on this  )

I felt like "suggested by" might fall under "functional equavilants" but ended up submiting with these credits as the early votes were all yes.
I just looked at all the versions of this film on dvd, and almost all have these credits. One from Austraila doesn't, one from the Netherlands has them all but last 2 are "screenwriter" and one from Denmark has the first 2 but not the last 2. Then 2-3 have incomplete or no crew yet. Going by the majority of profiles it seems more correct.

Ordinarily, 'Adapted By' doesn't get a credit.    However, this is a special case.  Ferris apparently created the play Death takes a Holiday, based on an Italian work by Alberto Casella.  See here:

http://cgi.ebay.com/Rare-First-Edition-Walter-Ferris-Death-Takes-a-Holiday!_W0QQitemZ350313585274QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxZ20100208?IMSfp=TL100208209006r33835

That is to say, what suggested the film is the Ferris play, which was in turn based on the Casella play.  The film wasn't based on Casella directly, but indirectly.  Since they're separate published works, I would lean toward keeping them both in as OMB.

As I wrote it's just my opinion.

A "Adapted by" is, if I understood right, a credit that just is used if it's not totally qualified for a writting credit (writer, screenwriter).
So I would leave it out. (This just could be a person that made some small changes to match to screen) [Not imoprtant enough, imho]
But I could also undrstand if it would get added as OMB (because technically correct)

I found another thread dealing with the Adaptation by credit. Especially the second last reply explains this credit thoroughly.

From the example in that other thread, I would agree that the adaptors would not get a credit, since they are just "adapted by".  This one is different, since the Ferris work that is the adaptation was a play, published and performed, which was expressly the basis of the Screenplay.  I would give it OMB.
