I came across this today:

Peter Lamont
Visual Effects Art Director

I wondered where to put this under Visual Effects or Art Director?

I wouldn't add him at all. Within Visual Effects only the roles: supervisor, designer and director are allowed by the rules.

Agreed.
No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

Agreed.

Me too
It all seems so stupid, it makes me want to give up!
But why should I give up, when it all seems so stupid?

You can add Visual Effects and the other variants without the modifiers (supervisor, designer and director) as well.

Otherwise i concur the Visual Effects Art Director is not valid.
Bad movie?  You're soaking in it!

I usually add a Visual Effects Art Director locally, but I would agree...don't submit them into the database as they are not specified in the rules.

That's why I used the phrase 'within'

Sorry, but for me it sounded also wrong because you wrote "... only the roles: designer and director are allowed by the rules."

If I'm understanding the credit chart right, all those are allowed:
Visual Effects
Digital Effects
Special Effects
Special Visual Effects
+ all this with ending
Designer    or
Supervisor  or
Director.

Imho perhaps he could be added, but as I can't say sure as what, I would leave him also out.
Has a good side-effect: No one will be abused if he's added in the wrong section.

I said the roles within Visual Effects. I didn't say that a 'Visual Effects by' credit wasn't, I was only talking about the roles. I thought it was pretty clear, my apologies if it wasn't.

According to this (very short) article on Wikipedia a Visual Effects Art Director is responsible for "conceptualising and designing visual effects shots" so could possible be "Visual Effects Designer" but as they are not specified in the rules best to leave it out.

No problem, just wanted to explain, why me and (perhaps) tweeter didn't understood it right. No need to apologize.

Matches to this:
http://careers.stateuniversity.com/pages/100000201/PHYSICAL-VISUAL-EFFECTS.html
-> "Visual Effects Art Director: design visual effects"
But as it's an "Art Director" it will go more into the thinking (from the Wikipedia-article: "making creative and aesthetic choices for visual effects"), then into the doing.

Yep, those are all acceptable.
I think the rules should be slightly changed to say "IF there are Visual Effects credits, then DON'T contribute Special Effects. Older movie vfx were called special efefcts, but for more recent sfx usually means skibs and explosions, not vfx anymore. It just leads to superlong effects lists athat contain info not many if any care about. Personlly I want to know who did the vfx and make-up effects on my horror films, I don't care who rigged the bus to blow.
