| | Posted: | | | | Has anybody else seen this musical? I went over the weekend and, while I thoroughly enjoyed it, I am not sure how I feel about the changes to the story as told in The Wizard of Oz. | | | No dictator, no invader can hold an imprisoned population by force of arms forever.
There is no greater power in the universe than the need for freedom.
Against this power, governments and tyrants and armies cannot stand.
The Centauri learned this lesson once.
We will teach it to them again.
Though it take a thousand years, we will be free.

| | Posted: | | | | It's one of my favourite modern musicals...and I loved how it retold Wizard of Oz. It's best to think of it as an alternate version (Elphaba's story) rather than changing The Wizard of Oz.
I found it hysterical and moving and Defying Gravity is one of the best Act I closings ever!
Here's hoping they make a film of it! |

I thought it was great. Loved the music. The whole set and costumes were amazing...loved the dragon clock around the whole stage best, myself. I had heard the soundtrack before seeing it, but it makes all the difference by adding the visual to how you hear the music, I think.
Have you read the book it is based off of? By Gregory Macguire, if you haven't. I thought they took the best part of the book to make the musical. He gets really political and a bit long-winded, but they grabbed all the right stuff to get the feel for it. | | | | Lori |

Here's hoping they make a film of it! I, too, found it funny and moving. I have 5 daughters, so female protagonists have always had a special place in my heart. Good writing, and acting, made it easy to feel for Elphaba...and, yes, Defying Gravity was a great closing to the first act. | | Posted: | | | | Great musical. Saw the German version. It's fantastic. Of course it is similar to the Wizard of Oz, but I didn't compared it, so the fun was really great. Perhaps if i would know the Wizard ... story-line better it could have been less good. What was making me thinking, were the parallels to the "Third Reich" at some times of the story. Has the American version also this parallels? All over a musical that makes fun, has heart and makes thinking. |
