I'm doing a full contribution for Star Trek (2009) Norwegian release, and I'm having difficulties deciding if Gene Roddenberry should be entered, and if he is, what would be the correct credit.

He is credited on-screen as;

Based upon "Star Trek"
      Created by
Gene Roddenberry

Thanks in advance fellow profilers...

Imho the only credit which can match is "Original characters by"

... but there are other users which have better knowledge in such questions.

I would enter him as OCB.  The film is not adapted from another medium, it is based on characters from another work...the TV series, which Roddenberry created.  Some people want to make it 'Created by', but that isn't correct as he didn't 'create' the film, just the TV series.  Just my, unemotional, opinion.

The credit:
Based upon "Star Trek"

Gene Roddenberry

is in every "Star Trek" film, and it is profiled as OCB in all the profiles except "Star Trek VI".
There is an upgrade pending (submitted by me) with 3 yes and 6 no.
Some people say that "Created by" is correct, not OCB, because no mention is made of characters, but of an entire universe; other say "Created by" is correct, not OCB, no mention is made of characters, but of an entire universe.
I think that the only contibution of GR to the films are the original characters.

OCB.

In this instance, "Created By" means that he created the entire basis of the world of Star Trek which all started with the original series.

If I'm not mistaken he's actually only credited as being the "Creator" of the Original Series and The Next Generation.

In no way did he Create the 2009 movie. How could he, he's been dead since 1991(I believe)?

The key words in the credit is "Based Upon" not the "Created By", all that's referring to is that he created the concept of Star Trek with the original series.

Agreed with OCB. OMB is only if they specific story of the movie was adapted from something by Gene Roddenberry, not just setting and characters.

I could definitely get behind OCB.

Every other "Based on....." credit is OMB unless it specifically says "Characters".

And TV is "another medium".

I can see why everyone wants to go with OCB, and I could live live it, but I just don't think it fits this credit.  He is not being credited for the characters, but for the "Star Trek" phenomenon itself.

I thought that way at first, but the notes for OMB say "adapted from another medium."  I don't think the films qualify as adaptations...which is why I went with OCB.

As long as there isn't a crew entry called 'Verse God I'd go with OCB.

Hmm, looks like most go with my opinion. Wow, I think I'll getting better interpreting the rules.

Imho it just can be OCB. Look at the rules and the notes for OCB: "Used for screenplays based on characters from another work, ..."  +    "For example ... sequels." -> I would say Star Trak (2009) is based on the characters from the original TV series which was "created by" Gene Roddenberry. And it's not a sequel, but a prequel, so this absolutely matches.
